Natnael Ali Smarter Decisions through Psychology 20221125 Using what you have learned about the adolescent brain and social development, answer the questions in this case study assignment. Your goals are to help Monica understand why her son makes the choices he does and recommend some strategies that may help solve the problem. For each question, you should write a paragraph-length response (5–7 sentences) to receive credit for this assignment. You may use your Sophia tutorials as a resource. Question 1: What happens inside the brain of a teenager that makes it difficult for Jordan to weigh the risks and rewards of his behavior? Describe how the adolescent brain weighs risk and reward. Teenage years are when our brain sensitivity to the neurotransmitter dopamine is at its highest for this reason sneaking out and going to a friend’s party gives Jordan way more dopamine than staying in and studying for an exam. Its hard for a teenager to weigh sneaking out and studying for an exam because dopamine which is in reward circuits of the neurotransmitter is at its peak in teenager. Therefore, adults and teenagers see risk and rewards different. Question 2: Why does it appear that Jordan values the opinion of his peers more than the opinion of his mother? Explain the psychological concepts that may account for why Jordan places value on his peers’ opinions. Jordan is trying to figure himself out therefore, his social identity is more important than what his mother say. He believes his peers can relate and understand what he is going through which makes their opinion greater than his own mother. Jordan is in the “identity crisis” phase where he is discovering who he is and what his morals consist of. Question 3: What advice would you give Jordan’s mother, Monica, that would teach him how to make better choices and decisions? Discuss a specific strategy that Monica may implement to help her son make better decisions. I would advise her to redirect him with positive reinforcements. Tell him she was a teenager before and the mistakes she made because of her peers and what those mistake causer her. Explain to him his actions have consequences that can affect the rest of his life. For him to listen to her she also needs to listen and try to understand him even if he is talking about things she don’t understand and never judge him. Question 4: If you were in Monica’s shoes, how would you feel? Explain why a better understanding of Monica’s perspective could result in more constructive advice. Page 1 PSY1010 – Touchstone 3.1
If I were in Monica’s shoes, I would try to understand Jordans point of view, but I still would feel upset. A better understanding of Monica’s perspective could result in more constructive advice because its easier to find mutually beneficial solution. Page 2 PSY1010 – Touchstone 3.1
