Describe two potential risks of Juan and Elena Hernandez’s disciplinary style on the psychological development of their children. Juan and Elena Hernandez's disciplinary style has the potential to negatively impact the psychological development of their children. Their punishment methods could affect their children's stress response system, leading to an increase in risky behaviors. This approach may also cause anxiety and low self-esteem, resulting in fear, worry, anger, and irritability. Additionally, their children may face an identity issue by identifying too much with a person they idolize, adopting their attitudes or behaviors. (Zastrow et al., 2019). Identify one theoretical perspective (e.g., Piaget or Erikson) that can be used to explain the children’s developmental stage. How does this theory apply to the Hernandez children and to the potential impact of the parents’ disciplinary style? Personality development occurs throughout an individual's life, starting from infancy and continuing into adulthood, through eight phases of psychosocial development (Zastrow et al., 2019). Each stage involves a crisis that can impact personality development in positive or negative ways. Erikson's psychosocial theory explains the Hernandez children's situation, where individual psychological demands clash with societal needs. Successfully completing each stage leads to healthy personality development and positive qualities. Failing to complete a stage can result in a diminished ability to complete other stages, leading to an unhealthy personality and a negative sense of self (Zastrow et al., 2019). Erikson's development theory states that although children may not finish each stage in a predefined timeframe, they can do it successfully later. Erikson also stressed how a person's upbringing has a big impact on how they develop, who they are, and how conscious they are of themselves. Erikson's stages of psychological development are founded on underlying conflicts that are thoroughly examined in each stage. Erikson's theory is helpful for parents because it enables them to identify behavioral signs that show a child is forming connections and work toward workable solutions to increase their child's self-confidence while enforcing a constructive disciplinary style. Giving children the flexibility to decide their own activities can help them develop their decision-making skills.
