Week 8 Video Hi Alex, I understand that you are going through a tough time, and First, I want you to know that your feelings are valid. Experiencing microaggression can be emotional and taxing. It's important that you know that you have the right to pursue your interests, such as cheerleading or any other activity, without feeling discouraged by negative comments from your coach. You deserve to be treated with respect and given equal opportunities to participate. I also understand that you are dealing with the shooting that happened in your neighborhood of the unarmed black man and all of this can be hard to process and its okay to feel a mix of emotions, including sadness, fear, and anger. Please know that I am here to help you through this process, and you are not alone. Your feelings and experiences, matter, and together, we will explore ways for you to cope and heal and find the way to address the situation while prioritizing your well-being. I am here to provide a safe environment for you to discuss your feelings and experiences and develop strategies to navigate through these challenges. Everything that we discuss is confidential unless you threaten to harm yourself or others and I will have to contact the proper authorities to get you help. Reflect on the practice skills you demonstrated in the video. Explain the potential impacts of ethnic and racial microaggressions on psychological development in adolescence. Describe how you would work with the student to curb these negative impacts. Draw on the values and ethics of the profession in your response . Active listening and creating a safe space were the practice abilities I demonstrated in the video with Alex. I showed empathy to show that I was aware of the psychological toll that racial microaggressions may have on adolescents. To promote self-expression, I also communicated with her in an open and effective manner. Due to the cumulative effect of microaggressions, adolescents frequently experience higher levels of stress, anxiety, and even depression (English et al., 2020). They may begin to doubt their identity and sense of belonging because of these subtle kinds of discrimination, which could have a detrimental effect on their self-esteem and self-concept (Zastrow et al., 2019). Additionally, microaggressions have the power to isolate the victims, harm their academic progress, and alter their behavior. As a social worker, I would assist the student in overcoming these drawbacks by enabling her to appreciate her inner resources and tenacity. By teaching the student about microaggressions, their effects, and assertive response techniques, I would like to encourage self-awareness and a feeling of self- identity, which is congruent with the concept of the "Client's Right to Self-Determination." In accordance with the social work value of "Social Justice," I would also promote the client's rights and well-being by helping the adolescent seek assistance from the school administration.
