Terman’s study of giftedness was a great measure for adolescences and adulthood in the areas of complex cognitive abilities, measures of creativity, mathematical ability, memory, motor skills, logic, and language mastery (Cherry, 2023). The purpose of Ternab’s extensive research and study was to be able to characterize children as being above average intellectually and point out characteristics of these kinds of children ( Hastorf, 1997 ).The benefits to this test included tailoring to the needs of gifted children and giving them specialized training so that they might turn out to be successful in adulthood. Another benefit mentioned is that intellectually gifted children in general were happier and healthier than the rest ( Hastorf, 1997 ). Some of the errors with this type of design is that it can favor certain groups of people typically those ranking high in social status and wealth (Warne, 2019). There are lingering opinions that most of the study are only justified by Terman with weak data. My personal opinion is that I understand how great of a benefit a test like this can be especially having indicators that can predict success. I believe that some test can be biased such as the ACT and depending on upbringing, economic status, and quality eof education this test alike the test offered through the Terman longitudinal study can often times be one sided to one group. Does this mean that the test is racially movitated? No, but it can be biased towards the strengths of particular groups. My question to you is if the Terman test can be a great indicator of success, what do you define success as? Is success found in the eyes of the beholder? Cherry, K. (2023, July 25).
