Psych 1205 UNIT 5: Discussion Department of Health Science University of the People Instructor: Joe Juarez October 9, 2023 SCARF and NVC as Leadership Tools: A Reflection SCARF Application 1 (Rock, 2009): I notice that a subordinate has been coming in late for work, and their productivity has been declining at a rapid pace. I would approach this individual with respect and curiosity. I would ask to talk to them as equals. Status: I would firstly recognize them for their previous contributions and work ethic, explaining how I value their work. Certainty: I would explain the metrics being used to grade performance and how to improve within those parameters, as well as establish a timeline of expected improvement.
Autonomy: I would ask them for their plan on how they feel they can best improve their performance, while still being fair and realistic. Relatedness: I would give them an open door to discuss any issue they feel they need help with, professionally, and if they feel comfortable, personally. Fairness: I will lay out my expectations, keeping realistic timelines. I would also mention that this is in leu of writeups and giving a fair chance to improve without affecting HR or disciplinary work records. I hope that this approach will let the employee feel seen, heard, and understood. This, along with realistic goals to get back on track, allows them to approach the issues in their own manner, giving a sense of autonomy and control. SCARF Application 2: I’m notified that my son is falling behind in school, not paying attention in class, and not doing his coursework. Status: I start by letting my son know that I am convinced he is an intelligent and well-mannered child. That I’m proud of his accomplishments and who he is becoming. Certainty: I would lay out the complaints against him and explain that we need to create a plan of attack. We could create a study schedule, placing
wants as a reward for completing things he needs to do. This can be expanded to me helping him through schoolwork or hiring a tutor. Autonomy: I would allow him to express what he feels works for him, while still guiding him to the best options. I’d listen to his needs, encouraging him to explore why he’s falling behind, and try to understand himself. Relatedness: I’d explain to my son that everyone experiences burnout, and for many different reasons. I have fallen behind in school, using jokes as a crutch to avoid boring work. I’d also follow up with him about what he’s currently learning in all his classes, emphasizing the ones he’s struggling in, but also touching on his favorite courses. Fairness: I would maintain a fair and consistent expectation. Allowing for study breaks, naps, and leisure time when it’s shown that he’s worked hard for the day. NVC Application 1 (Rosenberg, 2015): I’m working with another person on a school project, and they are not providing their portion of the work, slowing my end of the project down as well. Firstly, I would identify our main issue, a slowdown of work and miscommunication.
