Jennifer Duckworth Module Four Video Reflection Psy-491- Psychology and Social Change Professor Pravatta 11/15/23
Describe a cognitive or social theory that you believe explains the development of the participant's social change identity. Paul LeBlanc Started off by speaking about his upbringing which is how he first learned his sense of social responsibility. He then went on to mention his catholic religion, and his own lived experiences which also influenced who he has become today. (SNHU Media, 2021a) One of my favorite theories I have learned about over the past two years is Alber Bandura’s Social Cognitive Theory. This theory states that we learn within a social context. People learn from watching others and imitating them. If we see a person’s behavior comes with a positive reward or positive reinforcement then we are more likely to imitate that behavior. However, if we see the behavior is followed by negative consequences then we are likely not to want to imitate (Nickerson, 2023.) In Mr. LeBlanc’s case he witnessed his parents, and his church members' behavior along with them being positive members of the community which led him to grow into a similar version. I found his mention of being complicit throughout life interesting and I had honestly not thought that deeply into it until now. Simply buying a piece of clothing can contribute to child labor if you are not aware of where it is coming from. This is something that I will keep in mind from here on out. Describe how you can apply the psychological knowledge that you have acquired within your BA Psychology program experience to effect positive social change.
The knowledge that I have gained while attending SNHU will allow me to be more of a positive influence on the people around me. I am now more able to express myself intelligently and listen to others without feeling the need to respond. I am able to educate others and guide them as needed. I can promote the change that I believe in and I will continue to push forward with the strength and resilience that I have, knowing that it is not a race to get to the finish line.
