The studies conducted in the article focus on examining process (how individuals develop) and content (what is developing) in regards to gender identity development. The article states if they examine both personal and cultural components of development, they would have a better understanding. The articles data helps us to understand the narrative variables surrounding gender identity; for example, differences in narrative by use of sex versus no significance in differences of narrative by ethnicity. The found individuals identified based off of traditional, equality and should-be-equal narratives. Erik Erikson’s Psychosocial Theory suggests that a person develops through 8 Psychosocial stages of development. During each stage, a person experiences a psychosocial crisis that impacts personality development. Each crisis involves the psychosocial needs of a specific individual and conflicts with society. During the Identity vs. Role Confusion stage the adolescent between ages 12-18 explores themselves to find their identity. Erikson’s theory helps us to understand gender identity development. Gender Identity Development can apply to many programmatic themes. In reference to Self-Care, Gender Identity Development applies because during the psychosocial stage of Identity vs Role Confusion, a person will explore their psychosocial needs as an individual to explore themselves to find their true self and therefore better improve their life. Self-Care is extremely important to a person’s physical and mental well-being; finding your true self and feeling comfortable in your own skin will always improve your well-being through the lifespan.
