Milestone One The social issue that I have chosen to research and write about is substance abuse. I chose this topic due to my own personal history with substance abuse and recovery. When it comes to substance abuse there is not only this issue of the actual drug itself but also the other things that comes with it such as crime, disease, abuse, and death. The history of substance abuse is tricky to pinpoint but most research states that it dates back as far as humans do. “Certainly one, among many things, at which humans consistently excel is the willingness and desire to alter our consciousness and augment our sensory experiences. The vehicle for humans from prehistoric time to current day is the use of drugs to quickly accomplish this goal” (Fisher, G. L., & Roget, N. A. (2009). Drug use, history of. In Encyclopedia of substance abuse prevention, treatment, & recovery (Vol. 1, pp. 343-345). Drug and alcohol abuse affect not only the people who are using but those around them as well, this includes families and the society around them. Most of the time drugs lead to some form of crime or violence, along with a mess of other issues, which in turn has a negative effect on everyone in that community. According to the statistics in 2020 nearly 92,000 persons died of a drug-involved overdose in the United States alone (National Institute on Drug Abuse. (2015). Magnitude). What do people think about substance abuse? In my own personal experience, I have seen a variety of opinions on addiction from people who aren’t abusing drugs. There is a stigma around addiction, and it has begun to perpetuate the issue by creating more guilt, shame, and ignorance on the issue. According to The National Institute for Drug Abuse people with substance abuse disorders are still facing discrimination and stigma even though it is a chronic disorder (National Institute on Drug Abuse. (2015). Magnitude).
The only debates I can think about when it comes to substance abuse would be the question, is it a disease or all acts of choice or being weak-willed. The other one would be what is the best way to recover. While I was seeking treatment, I had some family members with very opposing beliefs some thought I needed to stay in jail others thought that I needed church. It seems most of the debates stem from the stigma that surrounds addiction.
