Neurodevelopmental disorders may be apparent in children early on, in many cases before the child begins any type of schooling (APA, 2022). The early years of an individual are characterized my plenty of challenges and development of adaptive functioning skills, which allow infants, toddlers, and children to thrive in their environment. Neurodevelopmental disorders manifest in ways that demonstrate a child’s inability to flourish and adapt. A range of signs are observed through limitations involving a child’s inability to learn, control movement, develop social skills, and develop intellectual ability (APA, 2022). For example, in the case of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), a pronounced clinical presentation will include a child’s difficulty communicating with peers, show little interest in various forms of play, and exhibit tremendous difficulty with change of routine in comparison to peers in the same developmental stage. In the article titled, Annual Research Review: Anterior Modifiers in the Emergence of Neurodevelopmental Disorders (AMEND)- A Systems Neuroscience Approach to Common Developmental Disorders, the authors explain that a systems neuroscience approach is helpful because it aims to look at these types of disorders occurring within the function of a system, in which results arise as various factors influence and are influenced by outcomes (Johnson, Charman, Pickles, et al., 2021). In this light, a reductionistic approach must be avoided at all costs, as there is not one singular underlying genetic, neurochemical, cognitive, or behavioral component which has been proven to provide an explanation for the development of a neurodevelopmental disorder. For example, it is well established that ASD development increases in likelihood due to a large variety of genetic, environmental, and brain factors; there is no single known predictor that increases likelihood of ASD development. In the course of these disorders, it is also important to consider how some children area able to overcome the challenges posed by a disorder through things like resiliency and protective factors of genetic or environmental nature.
Adolescence is a challenging time for all and symptoms and impairments related to neurodevelopmental disorders can make coping even harder. Families must remember that despite the challenges their child faces, they will most likely share the same desires as their peers to belong, bond, and explore relationships. Instilling in their child that he or she is lovable and capable of building healthy relationships with peers will help the adolescent be resilient when challenges are faced. Parents should consider joining a group or building relationships with other parents of children with neurodevelopmental disabilities. Having this support from other parents/caregivers can be empowering as parents learn from each other and support each other.
