Investigating Why Students Aren’t Learning 1 Frances S Daniels November 09, 2023 Northcentral University Dr. Lewis CT – 5010 Teaching, Learning, and Assessment Strategies and Principals
Investigating Why Students Aren’t Learning 2 Learning can be difficult for students on any level. The problem can be several things. Students may have difficulty expressing themselves, leading to other problems. Educators have an obligation to notice the signs that children display. These signs are not always clear and option times educators have to decipher the issues. If you are simply teaching the curriculum and not engaging with your students you will miss these signs. Students of all ages face things in their lives that may affect the way they learn. If students are having problems at home, they may not be able to focus on learning. They may act out in class or they may not be able to express themselves. Asking to leave class during a specific subject may be a sign of the student deflecting. The situation may be uncomfortable and they are subconsciously leaving class at the same time and they may not realize this behavior. Classical behavior uses terms such as unconditioned stimulus, neutral stimulus, and conditioned stimulus in order to explain the process of learning. If the student just started to ask to go to the nurse, then they would be displaying conditioned stimulus. This is when a trigger once did not lead to a response but now it does. If the student has deflected since the start of the school year and only during science, this would be a case of unconditioned response. This happens without the student even thinking about it. It is automated. In order to determine the root cause of the situation, there are several things to consider. First, check with the nurse to see if reviewing his medical records would be feasible. If something is medically wrong and the student just happens to display this during the same time every day or multiple times a week.
