Identify a Connection Between a Theory and Practice 2 Cognitivism deals with the functioning of the brain. It focuses on how different information is received, then organized, and lastly stored and how the mind retrieves the information. Cognitivism uses the mind as if it is an information processor or functions like a computer. This theory sees beyond physical or outward behavior. The cognitivism theory believes learners are able to actively become involved in this process. This theory constantly evolves because the mind is a fascinating organ and we are unaware of its full capacity. “It is a continually developing field which has influenced and been influenced by the developments in different fields including instructional design, developmental psychology, cognitive psychology, and increasingly cognitive neuropsychology.” (Esther Michela, 2022) Cognitivist learning stems from Behaviorist learning. The behaviorist theory had many inconsistencies and did not fully focus on the mind. This learning theory has expanded tremendously is its conception however there is not a specific model that has today been accepted by cognitive scientists. The cognitive progress relies heavily on short-term and long-term memory. When information is received, it starts with sensory input. An example is hearing the sound of a car horn, the smell of a flower, or how something feels when you touch it. Once the sensory system receives this information it is then transferred to the short-term memory. It is then executed through information processing. From infancy through adolescent years, children schedule a series of check-ups that involve checking their physical development, mental as well as cognitive It is during these times that parents learn of a problem in their growth patterns. Doctors compare results with the average results that make this determination.

Identify a Connection Between a Theory and Practice 3 Jean Piaget is famous for his four stages of cognitive development. He became fascinated with the development of the mind when he worked at the Binet Institute. He wanted to understand the reasons behind the excuse children give for wrong answers. He believed that our development changes in stages, as we develop, so does our cognition. In order for the cognitive to begin to develop a healthy form of knowledge, nature and nurture have to occur as they pass through the different stages. The stages are universal across all cultures. While all children pass through the same stages, it is not necessarily the same time. The four stages are sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete operational, and formal operational. (Mclead Saul, 2023) Piaget believed that cognitive development that occurs from birth. He also believed that the environment and biological factors can interfere with cognitive development. Rather than gradually change over a period of time, children’s capability to understand, think, and solve problems, is a start-stop process. The cognitive theory is very helpful in education. It improves comprehension when the learner attempts a new subject or task. Being a hands-on approach, cognitivism allows for a more in-depth comprehensive understanding of new material received by the brain. Cognitivism is also able to assist with problem-solving skills. Because this theory allows students to learn how to learn, the skills needed to enhance problem-solving skills may have been obtained prior to needing them. When a student has confidence in what they know, this promotes a healthy education career. For any function that requires in-depth thinking or acquiring new knowledge, the cognitive theory should be used.
