It is possible to combine client-centered and existential approaches in therapy. This combination can create a holistic approach that addresses both the subjective experience of the client and the existential issues they face. Why is it possible? Both approaches share similar principles. For instance, they both emphasize the importance of the individual's subjective experience, autonomy, and the capacity for self-determination. While client-centered therapy focuses on the client's immediate feelings and experiences (Cherry, 2024), existential therapy delves into the deeper existential issues such as the meaning of life, death, freedom, and isolation (Murdock, 2017). Combining these approaches can provide a more comprehensive therapeutic experience. A combined approach in therapy might involve several steps. As in client-centered therapy, the therapist would first establish a therapeutic relationship based on empathy, unconditional positive regard, and congruence (Cherry, 2024). The therapist would then explore the client's immediate feelings and experiences, helping them to understand and accept these experiences. Once the client is comfortable, the therapist might then introduce existential themes into the discussion, helping the client to confront and explore these issues. Finally, the therapist would empower the client to make their own decisions and take responsibility for their actions, as in existential therapy. Combining client-centered and existential approaches can provide a more comprehensive and holistic therapeutic experience. However, the therapist must be skilled in both approaches and be able to integrate them effectively. References Murdock, N. L. (2017).
