Q: What is the difference between a traumatic situation and a psychological trauma? A: In psychology, psychological trauma and a traumatic situation or experience are two somewhat related but very distinct concepts, and understanding what makes them different is essential for both practical applications in mental health and academic knowledge (Van der Kolk, 2014). Described as an event, occurrence, or series of events that can be extremely distressing, upsetting, or disturbing, a traumatic situation can be violent crimes, warfare, accidents, and/or natural disasters; however, the same event or traumatic situation can affect every person differently (Herman, 1997), seeing as how people have their own coping mechanisms and thresholds. On the other hand, psychological trauma is the emotional response one has to a traumatic event; it is typically a type of damage to the mind that happens to one after an extremely distressing event. This can lead to conditions such as acute stress reaction, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and other forms of anxiety disorders (APA, 2013). The key difference between the two is that a traumatic situation is the event itself, while psychological trauma is the emotional response to that event.
