These strategies provide actionable steps that educators can implement in their teaching practices. The article encourages educators to be curious and present while interacting with children. This emphasis on curiosity and wonder helps educators approach observation with a positive and open mindset. Which aspects of observing children do you already do? Whenever I interact with children in a classroom, try to be fully present and attentive by paying close attention to their actions, words, and nonverbal cues to gain insights into their thoughts and emotions. I do take photographs to track a child's activities over time. When observing, I focus on what children do and say. On many occasions, I engage in conversations and ask open-ended questions to encourage them to express themselves. My ultimate focus remains to build strong relationships to provide targeted support and create meaningful learning experiences. What would you like to improve on or do more of? List three steps you can take to sharpen your practice of observing children. There are the following ways I would like to do more. Structured Observation: I plan to implement structured observation sessions, wherein I will focus on specific behaviors or skills. For example, I will allocate dedicated time to observe a child's problem-solving abilities or their social interactions during playtime. Regular Reflection: Setting aside time after observation sessions to reflect on what I've observed. Considering how the child's behavior aligns with their developmental stage, what might be influencing their actions, and what strategies could be effective in supporting their growth.
Meenakshee Chandra CD-M04 Professor Shannon Family Engagement: Collaborating with families to gather a more comprehensive understanding of the child's behaviors. I should share my observations and encourage them to share their insights from home settings. This holistic approach can help to create a more accurate picture of the child's development.
