Scenario 1:  You are treating a 15-year-old female client for an eating disorder. She reveals that she is pregnant and does not want you to share this information with her parents. What do you tell her? Following the session, the client’s mother, who has been waiting in the lobby, asks how the session went. What do you say? Ethic Model Breakdown E - examine relevant personal, societal, agency, client, and professional values I would talk with the client about why she does not want to share this information with her parents so I can understand the situation a little better. I would inform her that I am legally not able to tell her parents in our state but would encourage her to reveal this information to them so she could get the proper care needed for the pregnancy if she wanted to keep it. I would respect the girl’s desire and work with her through her concerns. T – think about what ethical standards of NASW Code applies 1.01 – commitment to clients – It is my responsibility to promote the well-being of clients. I am there to support the client through this difficult time. When the mother approaches me, I would just tell her that the session went well and that we will continue our progress at the next session. I would not disclose any information the client has confided in me. 1.07b – privacy and confidentiality – I would not disclose any information to the client’s parents unless there is valid consent from the client. H – hypothesize about possible consequences of different decisions I would hypothesize different outcomes if she were to tell her parents, along with if she keeps the pregnancy a secret as long as she can and help her see the pros and cons of each decision, letting her make the decisions on what decision she would like to make. I – identify who will benefit and who will be harmed This would be identified through the different outcomes we come up with. I would also mention what type of prenatal is recommended for development and how no prenatal care can be harmful to the baby. C – consult with supervisor and colleagues about most ethical choice I would talk with my supervisor about the situation to make sure I am making the most ethical choice. I have left my personal values and feelings out of the situation.
