Describe and define the importance of CBT in group therapy. Use this weeks reading on CBT to guide you. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) uses cognitive-behavioral and relational strategies to support group members through relational or interpersonal conflicts. In Cognitive Behavior Group Therapy, the treatment plan is action-based, and clients decide on the strategy implemented (Carruth, 2013). The leader takes an active, supportive approach by encouraging clients to partake in outside activities, supporting clients through the intake and termination process, and proactively modeling and engaging in various techniques. Cognitive behavior therapy works in several stages: initial, working, and final. These stages work to analyze the problems presented by the group members; leaders actively provide interventions and implement feedback until self-responsibility is emphasized (Carruth, 2013). Some trainings that occur within CBT include social effectiveness and assertion training. CBT focuses on education and prevention while only being suitable for short-term work (Carruth, 2013). It can be highly restrictive by focusing too much on structure and interventions, which could interfere with group members’ progress. Reference List: Carruth, E . (2013 Apr 26).
