PSY 215 Module Two Milestone Template To complete this milestone, review the Pew Research article “Social Media and the Cost of Caring,” linked in this assignment in your course. As you weigh the costs and benefits of frequent exposure to social media, respond to each of the rubric criteria with a minimum of 3 to 5 sentences. Support your position with credible sources when appropriate. Complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information. According to the findings of the Pew Research study, there are several potential costs and benefits that result from frequent exposure to social media. o Describe one psychological benefit of frequent social media use. According to the article “Social Media and the cost of caring” one psychological benefit would be to enhance out relationships with our close family and friends. When technology is added to our everyday lives, we tend to share our emotions to help us deal with events that may stress us. (Hampton Pew research, 2015,p1) o Describe one psychological cost of frequent social media use. Frequent use of social media can also have its cost. One cost can be witnessing the stress of friends and family in our own lives. The Pew research study shows the gender difference of findings between men and women. Women tend to get more stressed when a loved one is going through a person stressor such as divorce or loss of a loved one. A male may become more stressed when a friend or family member is going through a loss of a job or accused of a crime. (Hampton, Pew research, 2015, p1) At the end of the study overview on page 3, the researchers discuss the notion of stress being contagious. Describe what the research findings tell us about the link between our awareness of other people’s stressful life events on social media and increases in our own stress . The Pew research article “Cost of caring “ explains that the link between others stress and our own is the relation we have with our own lives. Such stressful life events are no stranger to a human and the understanding that these events can happen tend to make people stressed. Another link is knowing that there is a person we know that is experiencing a loss or pay cut. Survey suggests that women tend to feel “the joy of missing out “because they are not part of that stress. As stated in the recent question when a family or friend is experiencing a loss of a loved one or a loss of a job we tend to relate to the stress. (Hampton, Pew research, 2015, p3) We often refer to our involvement in social media groups as being a member of a community. 1
o Describe how social media can promote the levels of education and awareness that help to enhance well-being. Social media and any major social media platform are a useful tool when it comes to spreading awareness. For example, during the 2020 Covid pandemic we were able to socialize, educate and communicate through social media platforms. In terms of well being we are able to participate in online therapy and virtual discussions. Social media is also a tool to help spread such things as communities or individuals in need, Education that pertains to mental health and self- awareness. Such education is spread fast and easily accessible Despite the positive intent of some social media influencers, their messages don’t always promote empathy, diversity, and inclusion. o If you were a social media influencer, describe how you would use social media to enhance compassion and empathy for all people who struggle with psychological disorders. As the Pew research article states “females tend to share emotions on social media because is helps us cope better with a stressful situation”. (Hampton, Pew research, 2015,p1). If I was a social media influencer, I would share my own personal experience with psychological disorders such as anxiety and depression. This would increase empathy from others or attract those who also experience similar disorders. I would then spread awareness of what a psychological disorder would look like or how we can help someone who is experiencing such disorder. One example that comes to mind is suicide hotlines or were to retrieve treatment. Sharing on such things like the political outlook of these disorder and how the community plan to help individuals.
