For this milestone, you will use the Four D’s diagnostic indicators to analyze one behavior that might impair a person’s adaptive daily functioning. You will determine if that behavior could potentially represent a clinical disorder. Use your template to address the rubric criteria listed below with a minimum of 3 to 5 sentences per bullet. Support your answers with a credible source when necessary. From the list in the Module Five Milestone Guidelines and Rubric, select one behavior that might impair a person’s adaptive daily functioning, then address the following: Distress: Describe the extent to which the selected behavior causes distress as characterized by mental or emotional imbalance. Depression can cause many levels of distress in the every day life. But when being diagnosed with Depression a professional may look at certain factors in the everyday life of the individual. For example, a person with depression may lose interest in everyday activities that would usually bring joy. Another indicator of depression is overall physical mental health, a person may neglect things like a good night’s sleep or physical activity. (2023, National institute of Mental Health) Dysfunction: Describe the extent to which the selected behavior causes dysfunction by interfering with adaptive daily functioning. Depression can cause dysfunction in a person’s adaptive daily life, also those who experience a negative effect on their personal, professional or their love life. When the depression affects these the greater the impact. The overall mood of a depressed individual would interfere with the overall relationship with those around them. Fatigue and introversion can also have an impact as this will keep from achieving everyday task and keep relationships healthy (2023, National institute of Mental Health) Danger: Describe the extent to which the selected behavior presents as a danger to self or others. An indicator that depression is have a significant danger on a person is when there is thoughts of self-harm or suicide. Many of these symptoms of self-harm could also affect those around by having more harmful aggression to those. This could include physical harm to others or expressing harm towards others. Other indicators that depression is a danger is when they look at other avenues for treating depressive symptoms such as drugs or alcohol. A person with depression has a higher risk of overdose or addiction. (2020, Health) 1
Deviance: Describe the extent to which the selected behavior deviates from normality. Depression deviates from normality in many ways. A person who is experiencing depression is also considered abnormal behavior. Such as someone who ignores hygiene or who doesn’t interact with family or friends. This abnormal behavior compared to someone who doesn’t suffer from depression is considered out of the norm.
