Antoine Smith-Shannon Week 3 Assignment Comprehensive Case Study Report Annotated Outline Andrea Yates CRJ 308 Psychology of Criminal Behavior Instructor: Brett Cross 25 March 2024
I. Introduction A. Opening: Gaining insight into a client's life from all facets is the first step towards comprehending their conduct. Andrea Yates, who was born on July 3, 1964, will be the subject of this overview. German immigrant Jutta Karin Koehler and Irish immigrant Andrew Emmett Kennedy welcomed five children into their home in Houston, Texas; Andrea was the youngest. Yates battled bulimia and hopelessness throughout her childhood, and at the age of 17, she talked to a friend about ending her life. Andrea did not endure childhood trauma and was endowed both mentally and socially. She graduated from Milby High School in 1982 with her diploma. She was the class valedictorian, the swim team captain, and an officer in the National Honor Society. Personality disorders such as borderline and antisocial are two psychological characteristics pertinent to my client's criminal behavior. Environmental, social, and developmental risk variables are also included. B. Thesis: Was Andrea Yate the victim of her own acts, or might a mental condition and sadness have been the cause? I discovered via this in-depth case study that several reasons could have played a role in her illegal behavior. II. Body: Andrea’s Psychological factors A. Her crime was influenced by her personal and societal circumstances, particularly by her severe despair. In addition to being too sick to go home and take care of her kids, she was discharged from the hospital early, which raised social concerns. She also found it
challenging to follow up with the psychiatrist because of her childcare obligations. Following her first child's birth, she experienced mild depression. Her fourth child's birth brought her back to melancholy. After trying suicide and overdosing on narcotics in 1999, she was hospitalized and prescribed antidepressants. Williams, Pete (2005). Mrs. Yates falls under Socioeconomic Status because she and her husband moved around a bit and even lived in a mobile camper for a while before he was able to secure them a stable home. B. The second factor is psychotic dilemma (mental health). Andrea stated while incarcerated that she had thought about killing the kids for two years. She said that she had not raised kids well and that their development was improper. She asserted that she had been marked by Satan and that killing her kids was the only way to keep them out of hell. After the couple's first child was born, Andrea Yates experienced a stabbing delusion, which was the first indication that she was mentally ill. C. I think encouraged her psychological factors was Following her father's death at the end of February 2001, Andrea Yates ceased talking, drinking liquids to compromise nursing her baby Mary, and started removing her own hair. III. Conclusion A. The narrative of Andrea Yates shows how psychological issues impacted her decision to commit a violent crime. Every element affected her executive performance and exacerbated the neurological impairments she had. Andrea's depression and inaction led her to commit the unthinkable. Before obtaining therapy and abusing children, Andrea Yates showed signs of her issues. She attempted suicide and pleaded with her husband to let her pass away while he was
