Hello, everyone! For this week’s discussion, I was assigned George Kelly. Funder (2019) explained that Kelly's singular contribution was to highlight how an individual's cognitive system (thinking system) integrates disparate worldviews to form subjective theories known as personal constructs. These constructs thus influence the interpretation of novel experiences. As a result, personal construct theory refers to Kelly's 1955 theory of personality. What is the source of these constructs? Kelly thought that while they are influenced by the past, they are not defined by it. What does that signify? Kelly primarily relied on the metaphor that everyone is a scientist in their own right—someone who gathers information and develops a theory to explain it (Funder, 2019). There are some advantages to Kelly's strategy. One of its strengths is that it seeks to comprehend how people create a set of personal constructions that aid in their understanding of the world by drawing on their subjective, unique experiences. This acknowledges how the social environment shapes personality and adds a more thorough, comprehensive understanding of the variations in each person's personality. Additionally, according to Kelly's method, people have flexible personalities that alter depending on how they interact with their social environment. But Kelly's method also has another advantage in that it frames a lot of psychological disorders, especially the ones that respond best to psychoanalytic or psychotherapeutic interventions. For instance, studies reveal that people with clinically significant depression and anxiety have overly rigid construct systems, making them vulnerable to experiential invalidation and producing unpleasant feelings that make life difficult (Tarescavage et al., 2021). Furthermore, Fredman et al., (2022) discussed how research indicates that people who suffer from PTSD symptoms experience "construct bankruptcy," which is the result of inadequate
means of interpreting or comprehending their experiences (p. 1165). Kelly's strategy is not without flaws, either. The difficulty of easily validating personality construct theory is one of its weaknesses. McMartin (2015) claims that although Kelly's basic postulate and its eleven supporting corollaries are relatively simple, the theory is difficult to verify or falsify. Additionally, Kelly did not provide an operational definition for his terms precisely. Kelly's method's poor capacity to arrange information regarding human behavior is just one more flaw in his method. Kelly's theories can only explain a limited portion of what is currently understood about the complexity of personality because he avoids discussing issues related to motivation, developmental influences, and cultural forces (McMartin, 2015).
