Using one of the participant quotes in the Findings section of the Matheson et al. study, analyze it by first identifying the main themes in the quote. “There was some pretty deep discussions . . . so I’m pretty thankful for [those]. And then mostly about thinking about things properly, and thinking about things in order . . . in terms of my goals . . . what I can actually start doing with [my] money if I’m not gambling. . . but not to reach out too far, like just stay in reality, you know, like ‘right now’ . . . What about right now?” (Matheson et al., 2022). This quote reflects the reorienting relationships with money. Matheson et al. (2022) notes through GAP individuals are able to gain new perspective on gambling and develop strategies to reduce financial harm. Provide an interpretation of the quote (what is the speaker saying?).  The speaker is saying that goal identification has enabled them to think about other areas they can use their money to reduce engaging in problem gambling. Setting goals or ranking financial priorities may encourage them to take care of responsibilities. Matheson et al. (2022) notes it was a way to facilitate commitment to harm reduction and recovery. Discuss how this would specifically inform one intervention recommendation for social work practice with clients. Your recommendation can be on the micro, mezzo, or macro level (choose one). This quote informs us that changing the way a participant thinks about money and gambling, can change the way they allocate their funds. At the micro-level a social worker working with this participant implement Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT). CBT focuses on the idea that the way we think, feel, and act, are all related. In other words, out thoughts cause feelings, that determines behavior. Reshaping the way we think could reshape the way we act (Turner 2017). Social workers can use CBT to provide outcomes such as abstinence and reduce negative cognitions about gambling. (Lopez-Gonzalez et al., 2020). Next, explain how you would adapt the practice recommendation that you identified so that it is culturally sensitive and relevant for a diverse cultural group (e.g., African American, Latinx, Asian American, or indigenous communities). Select only one group. Adapting EBP to ensure it is culturally sensitive and relevant for African Americans is crucial for engaging in culturally competent practice. Dudley (2020) notes special consideration should be given to African Americans due to the cultural beliefs, practices, and ritual. Psychoeducation should be provided this population prior to engaging in treatment. Additionally, Fenning (2021) suggests language, content, concepts, and goals should be considered as strategies for adaptation. I would ensure the treatment is aligned with their cultural beliefs and they set realistic goals. The NASW (2021) notes social workers should strive to understand the strengths within cultures and use these strengths to empower marginalized groups of people. Choose a surface structure or deep structure adaptation that Fennig reviewed and provide two strategies for application with your selected group. Be as specific as you can, using citations to support your ideas.
One surface structure adaption Fenning (2021) describes is matching race or ethnicity between client and therapist. This adaption implies that when clients and therapists share the same backgrounds, they are more included to build greater rapport (Fenning, 2021). Clients may feel a sense of belonging engaging with someone who shares their same experiences. Additionally, allowing clients to choose their own therapist creates a sense of willingness to engage in treatment. Fennig, M. Respond   to   at least two   of your colleagues who made a different recommendation than you did. Elaborate on their cultural adaptation with the group they identified. For example, you might discuss a merit or limitation of the cultural adaptation that your colleague proposed, or you might suggest an alternative application. Hi Shareah, Thanks for sharing this week. Barriers to Latinx’ help-seeking patterns include: age, gender, social stigma, mental health knowledge, religious beliefs, and language barriers (Gearing et al., 2024). Additionally, Latinos less likely to seek mental health services due to being viewed as weak as compared to Latinas. You mentioned “The Latinx community places a high priority on family.” This is an excellent identification of a
