Page Question Your original, unique responses - What are or might be your best strategies to prevent or address challenging behaviors? My best strategies are the way I respond to those situations. Usually, I am very calm but firm to ensure that this behavior is not acceptable. I do my best to reteach the correct behavior in that setting. 1 What low intensity strategies can you implement and why would they be important to your classroom practice? A few strategies that I use currently and would love be more proficient would-be behavior specific praise and opportunities to respond. 2 What do you need to remember when implementing behavior specific praise? That students that have developed these behaviors usually go through a seven-stage process known as acting out cycle. Such as, calm to a trigger, then agitation and will proceed to the acceleration as they hit their peak. Which will lead to a de-escalation and then recovery. 3 How and when can you most effectively use precorrection? The most effective way to identify precorrection is by anticipating a problem and then using the steps to correct the behavior. For example, with lining up after recess, if you notice that this is a struggling behavior for your students this would be the ideal time to recorrect. 4 What would your principal see you doing as you actively supervise students in your classroom? My principal would see that I would be is moving around the room, scanning and monitoring student behavior and work, and interacting with the students. This will help manage the classroom of behaviors but keep the students on task with their assignment. 5 Describe how you would use high- p requests to support a distracted or defiant student? For this strategy it is used on students who are having a rough day and do not want to a task. This could be a simple assignment or group project. In this moment it would be the perfect scenario to use high probability requests. 6 How can you use opportunities to respond to maximize student engagement and learning? First, I would create a list of questions or prompts for the students. The method that I have enjoyed using is shuffling 2 sets of index cards. One has the questions, the other has the students’ names and I will randomly pull to start the process. You can get 3-5 questions off if student engagement is normal. 7 When and how can you use choice making to support student learning? When a student is struggling to listen and you give them two separate options that will help with student learning. Such as, “you can do a or b but you have to pick one of
Page Question Your original, unique responses these options” 8 When and how can you use differential reinforcement of alternative behavior to support students? The time to use this is when the behavior is countable and has a clear beginning and end. Deliver the reinforcer when the student engages in the behavior. - What are your 3 best takeaways from all of these strategies? How do you see yourself using these practices in the future? I love the behavior specific praise and opportunities to respond. Another strategy I would like to utilize would be low intensity strategies. This seems like a good use of prevention without escalating behaviors. Addressing Challenging Behaviors (Part 2) Template
