1 Week 7: Writing Assignment Preshundra Jones Belhaven University EDU 503: Teacher Residency II Dr. Mincey April 22, 2023
2 A Summary of ADHD Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is another name for ADHD. It is a condition marked by impulsivity, hyperactivity, and lack of attention. ADHD is thought to be caused by several things, some of which are genetic and environmental. The National Alliance on Mental Illness asserts that genetics may play a significant role in ADHD. ADHD tends to run in families, and specific patterns in particular brain parts contribute to attention. It has also been demonstrated that the environment plays a role in ADHD because of a link between smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol while pregnant and having children. With treatment, people with ADHD can be successful in school, work and lead productive lives(National Alliance on Mental Illness). While specific ways of behaving related to ADHD are ordinary and may not concern the vast majority, somebody with ADHD will have trouble controlling these behaviors and show them significantly more regularly than a typical individual. There are three distinct ways ADHA appears. You will notice signs of inattention during this stage, such as being easily distracted, switching activities frequently, and quickly becoming bored with a task. Loss of things like school supplies or toys, inability to focus on or finish a single lesson or activity, and inability to listen or pay attention when spoken to when children are unmotivated and wandering or daydreaming. Difficulty quickly processing information and following instructions. Having trouble staying still, squirming, and fidgeting are all symptoms of hyperactivity. Relentless talking and contacting or playing with everything. Difficulty performing activities or tasks in silence. A child with impulsivity is impatient, does things without thinking about the
3 consequences, and yells things out. They have trouble taking turns, waiting, sharing, and interrupting others. Getting a determination of ADHD, can some of the time be troublesome because the side effects of ADHD resemble commonplace conduct in most small kids. Educators are often the first to see ADHD side effects since we see kids in a learning climate with peers daily. Learning and realizing these signs can assist an instructor in sorting out some ways to help a child with these side effects. My job as a teacher is to assess each child's unique strengths and weaknesses. I can develop strategies to help students with ADHD focus, stay on task, and learn to their full potential once I know their strengths and weaknesses(helpingguide.org). When working with a child with ADHD, a positive attitude is one of the most valuable tools I can have in the classroom(gentwenty.com). I can use my hand motion, sticky notes, or a discreet shoulder tap to warn students who become disruptive in the school, and if I must correct their behavior, I will do so privately. The three parts of assisting a kid with ADHA are convenience, guidance, and mediation. By seating students away from the window and the door, you, as a teacher, can help reduce the number of distractions and disruptions caused by ADHD. Create a quiet space for studying and taking tests that is free of distractions. Give each instruction one at a time, and if necessary, repeat it. Make use of pictures, charts, and color coding as visuals. Make tests and worksheets with fewer questions and frequently give short quizzes. Give the student time to organize their materials and assignments. Ensuring the student has a method for completing tasks and taking notes is all I can do to help a student with ADHD. A description of an activity that might be useful in my classroom.
