Hello Class, This 3rd week, our last name determined our third discussion prompt. Since we were asked to reflect on the evolution of these theories through time, my last name led me to be assigned to Erikson. As a result, I will attempt to answer the first question regarding the influence of previous theories on this theory. Freud had a profound impact on Erik Erikson. " Erikson developed his version of Freud's theory of psychological development based on the belief that certain basic conflicts arise at different stages of one's life" (Funder, 2019, p. 404). The psychoanalytic theory of Erikson, however, shows that he was not a Freudian. Erikson focused more on the struggles at each stage of libido than Freud did, which is another thing Erikson did differently from Freud. Regarding your second question, it has evolved over time. Its motivation is then to create a structure inside which improvement can be thought about instead of making a testable hypothesis. Rather than calling it a real examination, he described it as an instrument for thinking about. Several stages of identity development have been identified by Erikson's theory of identity formation (Cherry, 2021). Although there hasn't been a change in the theory, researchers still use and enhance it. Reference: Cherry, K. (2021).
