Data Collection/Analysis Plan Alexandria Daniels MEDT 8470: Action Research Dr. Melissa Johnston November 19, 2023 Data Collection/Analysis Plan
2 You are going to build on your Research Plan that you created in Module 4. 1. How will you investigate the concern/research question(s)? What are you going to do?  To investigate the impact of integrating gamification elements into digital literacy lessons on the independent research skills of 5th-grade students I will work with three fifth-grade classes at Lamar Milledge Elementary to integrate gamification strategies into traditional digital literacy education for fifth-grade students, effectively creating an interactive and immersive learning environment. This inventive approach will introduce game-like elements, challenges, and rewards, all designed to captivate students' attention and enhance their motivation. 2. What type of data will you collect? Quantitative or qualitative?  What data do you need to learn about your question? To comprehensively investigate the research question on how the integration of gamification elements into digital literacy lessons impacts independent research skills among 5th-grade students, it's beneficial to collect both quantitative and qualitative data. Quantitative Data: This data is essential to establish a measurable, statistically supported understanding of the impact of gamification on independent research skills. I will collect quantitative data through: Pre- and Post-Assessments: These assessments will include objective measures of research skills, such as the number of relevant sources found, quality of source citation, or the effectiveness of research strategies. Using pre and post-tests for student skills to investigate the impact of integrating gamification elements into digital literacy lessons on the independent research skills of 5th-grade students is essential for data-driven assessment. A pre-test helps establish a baseline understanding of students' research skills before gamification integration, providing a clear starting point for evaluation, and the
3 post-test, administered after the integration of gamification, allows for a direct comparison to measure the impact of these elements on independent research skills (Anunpattana et al., 2021). This method enables educators to quantitatively gauge the effectiveness of gamified approaches, identify areas of improvement, and make informed decisions about instructional strategies, ensuring that the integration of gamification optimally enhances the development of independent research skills among 5th-grade students. Qualitative Data: Qualitative data is valuable for understanding the nuanced experiences, perceptions, and motivations of students and teachers. I will collect qualitative data through: Teacher Interviews : Gather qualitative data from teachers who can provide their perspectives on how gamification impacts student behavior, motivation, and skills. Interviewing teachers to investigate the impact of integrating gamification elements into digital literacy lessons on the independent research skills of 5th-grade students is crucial as teachers serve as key stakeholders with unique perspectives and insights. Their observations can provide a comprehensive overview of how gamification impacts student engagement, skill development, and overall learning experiences. Through interviews, teachers can offer nuanced details about the effectiveness of specific gamification strategies, any challenges they encounter, and how they adapt their teaching methods to suit students' needs (Kabilan et al., 2023). These insights can inform pedagogical decisions, lead to the refinement of gamified teaching approaches, and ultimately enhance the development of independent research skills in 5th-grade students in a more informed and targeted manner.
