Evidence-Based Teaching Plan Title: Psychogenic Nonepileptic seizures Health Care Need PNES   are events that can look like seizures but happen due to psychological triggers. It is more common among women then man, and teenagers over younger children. According to a Cleveland Clinic article, the only proving treatment for PNES is psychotherapy. Target Audience PNES can develop at any age but is most common between ages 15 and 35. It is more common in women, and particularly in women who have been victims of abuse. Psychiatric disorders such as depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). So the target audience for this project is high school teachers. To be educated on what PNES is and what action to take or avoid in case of an episode. Barriers to Learning Counseling is the best intervention; antidepressants are often found necessary to treat PNES. However, family background and belief could prevent the pursuit of counseling. Some reasons many people don’t seek mental health treatment: Judgement: scared that if they seek help their peers might see them as broken. Doubt: Fear that parents and teachers may think that they’re faking the episodes. Misinformation: previously misdiagnosed with Epilepsy and not knowing the difference between the disease’s characteristics. Learning Outcomes The learning goal of this presentation is to spread awareness on how to manage a PNES episode. Some of the ways to evaluate learning outcomes includes: Teach back technique. Short quiz after presentation. Give the opportunity to students and teachers to ask questions. Method of Content Presentation My target population is high school teachers. Educate them about steps to take if/when an episode occurs. I’m using power point slides as a method of learning. Method of Evaluating the Learning Outcomes My teaching project is intended for high school teachers.
Evidence-Based Teaching Plan Thorough, Detailed Content Outline PNES is a condition that causes seizures but happens due to psychological triggers. Seizures are an abrupt, excessive, and uncontrolled electrical discharge of neurons within the brain that can cause alterations in the level of consciousness and/or changes in motor and sensory ability and/or behavior. Precipitating causes include physical/psychological abuse, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression and bullying. Treatment: Psychotherapy: A type of treatment that focuses on people with PNES. Interpersonal and psychodynamic therapy: Helps work through unconscious processes. Family therapy: For families with children who suffer with PNES. PNES episodes management: Remain calm. Remove hazards in the area. Place the person on one side and open airway, if possible. Call EMS if: o The person stops breathing. o Any injury has occurred. o Seizure lasts for more than 5 minutes. o This is the person’s first seizure. o Child is unresponsive to painful stimuli after seizure.
