UNDERSTANDING THE NEEDS OF EXCEPTIONAL CHILDREN By: Claire Almanza
EVERLY’S BEHAVIOR REFLECTION Pre-toddler in my room for 2 months Challenging behaviors are focusing and paying attentions during daily routines and experiences Diagnosed as neurodivergent- a term used to describe how a child's brain processes information, how they learn, how they behave, and how it differs from what is considered typical. Neurodivergent can be mistaken for bad behavior in an early learning environment setting depending on the disorder This can be impacting Everly's behavior by her being overstimulated with materials in the classroom, short attention span, not sitting down for an activity or mealtime.
ROUTINES One daily routine in our young toddler room is mealtime. The way this looks in the classroom is the educators giving a five-minute warning before starting to clean up. She will then use a handclapper as the indicator for clean up time and announce to the children, “Okay friends it’s time to clean up and meet on the carpet”. So, they will begin to sing the clean up song, “clean up clean up everybody everywhere, clean up clean up everybody do your share. I like the way that Everly's cleaning, I like the way that Gabriel’s cleaning” They will sing the song until the children who are cleaning up have all been named in the song and end it with “thank you thank you thank you”. While one educator is assisting the children in cleaning up and singing the clean up song, the other educator is making her way to the library rug area to start circle time. And sitting the children on their pictures that are taped down in a circle shape on the carpet. IN a perfect world all the toddlers will clean up their mess and put things exactly where they belong, but that’s just not real.
