1. The text describes thirteen roles that counselors perform in most settings in which they are employed. Discuss seven of them and give examples of how they might be applied in the setting you are interested in working. - As I want to become a foster mom for teenagers, I find that the idea of individual counseling appeals to me. This of course would look a lot like parenting. With a new child in the house, I would want to sit down and listen to their expectations and wants as well as their future goals. Rather than consistent formal meetings it would consist of shorter check-ins and updates throughout the week and month. - As a future human resources graduate, I could use consultation activities to promote positive changes within the company by setting up self-help workshops and time management classes. - As a foster parent I can use coaching techniques to help guide the child toward their goals. - Mediation is a role I’m very familiar with as it is used consistently in my current workplace to facilitate arguments between coworkers. This can easily be transcribed to mediating both in a corporate environment and at home within the family unit. - I enjoy administrative work. I find the organizational aspect of the tasks to be soothing. I can put my mind in order as I organize tasks and paperwork. Administrative work is something I look forward to doing in my future workplace as it will put me in a state of calm that is not easily broken by other more emotion- filled tasks. - As a person who grew up with technology, I find that I am nearly addicted to it. Using computer technology to send correspondence and do personal research is already a daily habit and one I expect to continue using in all future work settings. - Eventually, I hope to find myself with the time to be a child advocate and work with the foster care system in that way. I believe there should be someone out there speaking up for those who feel they have no voice or who legally have no voice. As a person who has felt unheard and dismissed many times throughout my own life, I find myself drawn to help others avoid that same feeling that it leaves behind. 2. A number of generic skills used by counselors are described. Discuss five of these and give examples of each. - It’s always important to understand the patient’s definition of a word. For example, one might tell you they’re tired all the time. Does this mean they are sleepy, or does it mean they feel no motivation to do normal, everyday tasks? We can even use these diagnostic skills in our everyday lives to help clarify and keep from misunderstanding our coworkers, friends, and family.
- We use exploration skills to get to know people and how they think. We all use this skill when in romantic relationships as well as with patients. For example, we often ask our significant other what they are currently doing in order to better understand their daily routine and habits. We can ask patients similar questions to learn more about their habits and even their past. - In order to build a relationship with clients we need to be honest with them so that they will in turn trust us and be willing to be open and honest with us. When a client is hesitant we can share a small piece of our own story that is pertinent to their problem. - Eventually we need our patients to take action. By guiding them through probing questions such as asking them how they plan to achieve their goals, we can have them set up their own plan of action to help themselves. This may also help mitigate some of the feelings they have that set us up on a pedestal if they feel that they came up with the plan on their own. - In order to know if a treatment plan is working we must evaluate our patients to find out if they are making any headway or if we need to change our course of action. We do this by asking clarifying questions to probe deeper into the issue at hand. 3. Discuss the six steps presented in the text to help counselors develop a flexible specialty. How might you personally use each of these suggestions? Give examples. - By becoming a client I may open the door to meeting and getting to know other counselors and ask them questions about the job (Kottler & Shepard, 2015) like what they chose to specialize in or how they market themselves. - I can talk with potential employers about what they expect from a counselor who works for them by asking questions like is the positions self-directed or will the counselor be working with individuals or groups and what would that look like. Asking questions like these will help me market myself in an appealing way so as to attract their notice later and who knows, I may build a relationship through asking about the position that eventually leads to me getting hired into the aforementioned position. - I can look around at the different potential types of clientele and workplaces like the local soup kitchen and see if I feel interested in specializing in any of those ways. - I can take classes and earn certificates in different areas like drug abuse to help market my expertise in my chosen areas. - I can volunteer at different locations like the homeless shelter to gain more experience. - ???? 4. Six principles guiding the use of Internet counseling were described in the text. Choose three and explain their importance, giving specific examples.
- There is always the risk of emails and video calls being hacked by a third party for private information such as the client’s name and birthdate and making sure the client is well informed of these risks is necessary to protect yourself from lawsuits and in order to show the client transparency and thus build trust with them. You should also make sure that you can operate and fully understand the platform you are using to conduct your sessions. In this way, you can confidently guide a less technologically skilled client in the use of the platform when they are having issues and keep your own technology issues to a minimum to avoid disruptions. When evaluating your client’s needs, you may find that an online approach would not be appropriate. It’s much more difficult to read body language through a pixelated screen and if the client has anxiety that they are unaware of you may miss it too because you were unable to see more than just their face. 5. Many students enter the counseling field with ideas about private practice. From your reading, discuss some pros and cons for this aspect of professional counseling. - As nice as it would be to be one's own boss and create one’s own schedule to work the hours that one may prefer there are also a lot of difficulties as well. There is the need to be one’s own secretary and respond to all messages and emails while also doing the normal paperwork of a counselor, as well as continuously marketing oneself in order to gain new clients. One must also send out bills and payment reminders, which can be difficult due to the relationship between the client and counselor. 6. Discuss the role of respect in the counseling relationship. How is respect communicated in behavioral terms? What is the relationship between self-respect and communicating client respect? - Without respect it becomes very difficult to build a relationship. When there is no respect, the client is not likely to listen to your advice. Without respect, the client is more likely to be late to sessions and less willing to share deeper and more personal details. When respect is absent, the client will be more likely to speak out against you in public and that may lose you future clients as well. In order to receive respect, you must act like someone that deserves the respect. You have to have a certain level of confidence and bravado. If you can show the client that you follow your own advice and they can see how it works for you, as well as holding onto the calm non-judgmental counselor demeanor then the client should see that through the way you speak and in your actions which will communicate to them that you are to be respected.
