Brittney Hackett Videos Paper SPCE 680 Section 819
In the first video a two-year old boy is dancing and chasing his shadow. As he is doing this his parents are telling him to step on his shadow, in which the child does respond by doing so. The child engages in some screaming and hand flapping while listening to music and stepping on his shadow. His mother must repeat his names multiple times in order for her to get his attention. She also asks him how much he loves her, but he does not vocally respond to her. According to the DSM-5, the child meets criteria for Autism. He has deficits in social emotional reciprocity. He does not initiate or respond to interactions from his mother, and he also fails to make eye contact with his mother. The DSM-5 states that a criterion for autism is having deficits in social emotional reciprocity, meaning failure to initiate or engage to social interactions. In A.2 of the DSM-5 it explains that deficits in nonverbal communicative behaviors is a criterion for autism. In this case the child fails to make eye contact with his mother and has low developing verbal language. He also engages in hand flapping. In B.1 of the DSM-5, stereotyped or repetitive motor movements (e.g., hand flapping) are criteria for autism (CDC, 2022). In the second video, Bridgette is dancing in the bathroom rocking back and forth. She is with her mother and her mother starts singing. The child also starts singing but is making minimal eye contact with her mother. Her vocal communication is not super developed, and it is hard to understand her. She also engages in some hand movements. She is also not very engaged with her mother as she is speaking to her. She also seems to be fixated on the shower curtain and is trying to hold on to it. Bridgette fails to have a normal back and forth conversation with her mother, when she is talking to her, in A.1 of the DSM-5 deficits in social emotional reciprocity is an indicator of autism. She also has deficits in nonverbal communication (A.2 of DSM-5), she does not make eye contact, and has poorly integrated verbal communication (CDC, 2022).
According to the DSM-5, fixated interests that are abnormal is also a criterion for autism, this would relate to her playing and trying to climb on the shower curtain. In the third video, the child is in the car listening to music. He is making vocalizations, but not producing words. He is looking up and tapping his face with his hands as well as his temples. He is not responding at all vocally to his mother or making eye contact with her. He is also engaging in repetitive body movements (stimming) that is considered a criterion for autism in the DSM-5. In the fourth video, Diana explains her sensory issues. What triggers her is noise and touch. She explains how it would bug her if she were touched, but if she falls and gets a scrape it may not bug her at all. She uses music and reading to help ease her anxiety. This is related to B.4 in the DSM-5 which states hyper-or hypo reactivity to sensory input as criteria for autism. She does not like being touched and it can overstimulate and bug her, but if she falls and get a scrape she may not even notice or feel it. This would also be related to B.4 as indifference to pain. She read also read Harry Potter around 30 times, this is related to B.3 of the DSM-5, which explains fixated interests that are abnormal in intensity (CDC, 2022). Diana explains how she used to play barbies when she was younger and everything had to be her way, she said that her mom was not allowed to make up her own script while playing, if she did, she would throw her barbies on the floor and sometimes kick her mom. This is related to criteria B.2: insistence on sameness, and inflexible to routines, as she would be in distress if her mother did not follow the exact script while playing with her (CDC, 2022). In the fifth video the child is engaging in a tantrum. She is stomping her feet and screaming and throwing her head forward. Her mom is hugging her tightly trying to calm her down and refrain her from hurting herself. She starts spinning a bowl when she starts to calm
