Themes Three themes that had emerged through my researching would be the quest for self-discovery, the impact of collective group identity and it’s impact on societal change, and the evolution of social identity throughout an individual’s lifespan. All of these are heavily influences by the world around us, whether it’s our social circle, our upbringing and many other factors play a role in not only how we see ourselves but also how we view the world around us and what we deem is important. Personal Significance
There are so many things that go into the making of who we are and our social climate plays a large role in this. The influences we are exposed to make up our social identity and helps shape our we perceive the world. Personally I had a mother who was very cold and off putting and as a result the way I interact with my kids has a similar style in which I have to work against in order to be the mother I want to be and not what was modeled for me. This is true in many areas of life and how we are modeled behaviors and values really does take shape as we grow. The idea that social identity is something that morphs and changes throughout our lives is something that really hits home for me. Within my 27 years alive, my social identity has changed several times, and I like to think I am changing currently as my children grow and my roles within my family shifts. Societal Significance I believe that the impact of collective group identity and it’s impact on societal change is the most significant when it comes to societal change. As our country is so diverse and we don’t have a set “culture”, we do have major conceptions and regionalized ways of life and thinking. For instance, where I am from there is a major difference in ways of life and thinking in comparison to larger areas. In rural eastern Oregon, many people don’t understand the importance of change, and are living life in a way that keeps change from happening as a way to “preserve the old ways” however this way of life isn’t helping and as generations continue this way of thinking this area remains to be closed off and unable to understand differences in ways of life. I think that this collective group identity is negatively impacting the societal change that is so desperately needed to be more aware and inclusive to marginalized groups. It’s more of the same, and not an improvement to society as a whole. Theory of Personal Change I believe that theory of personal change that best fits me would be self affirmation theory. I have had many challenges within my life, from suffering at the hands of an abuser, to being a single mother making her way through the world, to now, being a full time working mother of two pursuing a degree to better my family. These challenges all required me to adapt my life and show resilience in many ways. Being a full time student on top of a full time job is hard, and being able to adapt my lifestyle to help facilitate this opportunity never gets easier. However, I still stand. I have to adapt and change in order to allow myself to accomplish what I desire and what my family needs. Social Change Initiative Personally, for my area of the country, I think a social change initiative working towards a more accepting and inclusive way of life is much needed. I am in a very conservative area of Oregon, meaning that those with mental health needs, those within the LGBTQ community and those of
