Introduction Which came first, natural teen aggression or violent video games? The ongoing debate about the impact of video games on children and teens revolves around whether they are harmful or helpful. Video games do not cause violence in our society for several reasons. Video games actually have multiple positive effects on members in our society. While there is a lack of evidence that proves video games directly cause violence, there is strong supporting evidence that video games positively impacts empathy, prosocial behavior, family bonding, and friendship quality. Arguments Cooperative video games promote positive behavior and friendship quality. Verheijen, Stoltz, van den Berg, and Cilleson (2019) discovered that cooperative video games have a positive influence on behavior during play and friendship quality among adolescents. Gaming together encourages teamwork, communication, and cooperation, fostering positive social interactions and stronger relationships. Nowadays, people stream and play video games in large groups online together. Whether it is in person or online, human emotion is directly impacted from playing videos games. Despite the negative rep, video games promote prosocial behavior and empathy. Research conducted by Harrington and O’Connell (2016) indicates that kids who engage in prosocial video game play, show increased empathy and prosocial behavior. Video games can serve as a platform for communication, providing opportunities for individuals to learn and practice empathy in simulated environments. 2
