Running head: CASE STUDY 1 Case Study Assignment Daniel D. Graham Grand Canyon University PSY – 470 Professor Jackson
CASE STUDY 2 Case Study Assignment Upon completing review of the vignette and the DSM diagnostic codes the provided information describing Jorge’s problem has led to the diagnosis of Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD). AUD is described as a pattern of drinking where an individual has very low levels of control over their drinking. The individual becomes dependent upon alcohol and exhibit increased consumption despite developing health complications (Mayo Clinic, 2022). One is able to determine that Jorge is displaying a variety of AUD related symptoms and is experiencing them all at once. Despite the wedge alcoholism has drove between Jorge and his family, his drinking continues to increase. Jorge is also experiencing drastic health concerns such as memory loss, fainting episodes, and falls as described by his son Guillermo. Using this information the DSM diagnostic code3s could determine that Jorge is suffering from mild alcohol use disorder. AUD Symptoms Jorge has been shown to spend a copious amounts of times consuming alcohol, this is continued despite the present health risk and increased tolerance over time (Alcohol Use Disorder, 2022). Using the information provided by Jorge’s son, Jorge typically begins drinking in the early afternoon and continually throughout the evening. Seemingly, Jorge has permitted alcohol to cause complications with his physical health, such as frequent heart attacks. AUD is also affecting Jorge’s career as he has been prohibited from flying until his health improves. Lasty, AUD has caused turbulence in Jorge’s familial and friend relationships. This correlates to his divorce and developing a very strained relationships with his children. Jorge’s son, Guillermo has stated that there is no point in attempting to keep the pace of his dad’s drinking as he has been known to consume a six back of beer and remain seemingly sober. Jorge has been

Cultural Influences & Factors The sociocultural model is a treatment method that emphasizes how cultural perception, and standards of society can negatively impact an individual and play a role in the development of dysfunctional behaviors. Many cultural standards are subtle but strong. These standards often result in the establishment of bis and/or prejudice against other cultures. One example is the perception that America overly values the act of being intoxicated. In a myriad of ways, the potential for the development of addiction can be brought on by cultural factors. For example, in the homeless community, individuals struggle or have no resources to help increase their betterment in life. Under these circumstance, individual find a way to distract themselves from their situation. This is what aids in the development of environments that allow addiction to bloom. For Jorge, his experiences are aligned with his continued consumption. Jorge has experienced divorce, isolation, and unemployment. Therefore, Jorge has also suffered from abandonment issues and increasing financial instability. As Jorge continues to drink it is safe to assume that his troubled sociocultural experiences will develop and become more tragic. This will create a cycle in which Jorge will continue to overly consume alcohol as his dysfunctional behavior grows. Potential Causes & Treatments Research indicates that high risk individual for AUD fall into three potential categories: suffering from mental health conditions, past trauma, and hereditary alcoholism. The development of AUD in these individuals depends on rate of consumption, frequency of consumptions, and consumption efficiency. Individuals suffering from depression, PTSD, and
