(eating disorders, depression, suicide, driving and drugs) Eating disorders - Eating disorders are more common in girls and people who question their dexual orientation or identity. 1-10% of teens experience eating disorders. Eating disorders can lead to poor mental health and can lead to many other mental health issues. Depression- Adolescents struggling with depression can be very hard because during the adolescent argos of life when life is the busiest weather it is being busy with school, work or friends when you have depression it can take all that away and worse case lead to suicde. “Depression affects 25% of females and 12% of boys will experience a major depressive episode by the age of 19” (Clinic, 2018). Suicide - With all the suggles that teens face in there adolsnet stages it is very easy for them to become deprees and when depression get bad it can lead to suicde. In the teen stages of adolesnets bullying is very common wether it is physical, verably or cyber bullying it happends alot and in alot of case it leads to depreeison and some times unforanlty leads to suicide. Driving- During the early stages of adolescence the teens brains are not fully developed and they want to take all the risks possible because of the feeling of thrill seeking. Driving is one of the big risks that is common for teens because when you are behind the wheel you have full control over what happens. You can speed, drive really close to another car, not wear a seatbelt or even drive drunk. Drugs - When in your teen years it is very easy to be influenced by peers. In these situations “as teens your prefrontal cortex is not fully developed and will not be until mid 20’s” (Leslie, Adol. Physical Development, #16). The prefrontal cortex helps cortal impulse and helps make good decisions. 7. Why is only working 10-15 hours in a positive work environment good for adolescents in their teens? When we are in the teen adolescent stage of our lives it is the most stressful time and the most common time for a person to be struggling with mental health. Therefore if a teen has to work more there they will feel more stressed and their school work will start to lack. “It has been proven that teens only working 10-15 hours a week do better in school”(Waterman, 2019) and if they have a positive work experience they are more likely to have icred feelings of competence and efficacy.
Case Study - Cole, Is a 16 year old boy who attends highschool. He has recently been caught bullying his classmates and making them give him all the money they have on them. When Cole talked to the principal he mentioned that he is a part of a group of boys who are trying to collect money to defray the hospital bills of one of the boys in the group's mothers who was just diagnosed with terminal cancer. When he was caught he blamed the societies and their failure to meet the medical and health care needs of the people who do not have money to spend on healthcare. Cole is a very smart student and has no record of using any kinds of drugs. However he expresses his desire to live independently away from his parents when he graduates from highschool as his parents hate their relationship with his girlfriend. Although when in college he hopes to get a college varsity scholarship and have a part time job. When he was asked if he thought it was a good idea to rob money from other students, he said he felt that he was wrong and he just wants to be accepted by his friends. He also said that his friend's mother is going to be gone soon and he hates to see her suffer. Analysis of case study Jean Piaget - theory of cognitive development shows that a person that is 13 into adulthood is in the formal operational stage which is Piaget's fourth cognitive stage. In this stage someone like Cole develops thinking and reasoning similar to a typical adult. Cole encounters new worlds of concepts and discusses hypothetical situations and problems. He discusses ideas such as freedom, unity, and love and beams more adept to solving problems verbally and examining situations that are hypothetical such as “what will Happen if everyone will rob other people's money?” Erik Erikson - Cole is aware of the conflict between his parents and his need to have a relationship with his girlfriend. He resolves this issue by considering living on his own apart from his parents. Cole is behaving recklessly and bullying other students in order to be accepted by his group. Cole's inner conflict is shown by his need to please his friends and help a sick dying person. Cole has not left his carefree, irresponsible and impulsive behaviors of his childhood and he has not developed the more purse, responsible and planned behaviors of an adult. He is unsuccessful in making changes, He will struggle to develop a sense of confidence, values and positive identity. Cole also experienced the role of confusion and that could result in low self esteem and that could lead to being socially withdrawn. Freud - The genital stage is the period from puberty through adulthood when the person has renewed sexual desire that needs to be fulfilled trhough pleaur such as having a realtionship with others. Cole has a relationship with a girl even without the approval of his parents. If Cole were to successfully resolve the conflict in each of the phsycosexual stages he would be able to develop a lovong, healthy and mature adult personality.
