Week 9: Weekly Journal#9 Wilfred Cruz CUNY SPS PSY 317: Family Psychology Dr. Bielek March 26th, 2024
This week, I focused my attention on divorce/family break-ups, family instability, and family deconstruction but I believe there are more and better alternatives to help two partners in a relationship strive for strength in different therapies than going straight towards divorce or even divorce rituals. Divorce Rituals are symbolic events that mark the end of a marriage between two partners who will embrace new chapters of their own lifes efficiently. Positives on divorce rituals in cultures, divorce rituals can have different effects on children based on how they are performed and the signals they convey. Children can process their feelings and move on via rituals that help them accept change and loss (Fredenburg and Hughes, 2023). On the bright side, rituals for divorce can provide closure. Signifying the end of one chapter and the beginning of a new one, they help children understand and welcome change. Set a constructive example for the future: Rituals that highlight parental collaboration and respect might aid in the healing process. But there is much lacking in divorce therapies when it comes to the children of the divorce. Divorce rituals should be created with the children's emotional well-being in mind, placing a strong emphasis on healing and positive results (Perkel, 2022). However, divorce rituals can also reinforce your negative feelings: Confusion: If not handled with caution, they may increase children's feelings of abandonment, guilt, or humiliation. If there's not clear communication about rituals, children may not understand what the changes mean for them. This is something I have seen for fellow classmates over the years who had experienced their parents being divorced even with the use of divorce rituals but also wish that their parents communicated and went into more further effort to bond for the relationship to strive. Which leads me to looking into therapies such as sex therapy that can help a connection between two partners along with international family therapy that focus on communication as key to strengthen other aspects of the relationship itself ( Thoburn & Sexton, 2015). Sex between couples strengthens bonds and, most importantly, develops the relationship between those who want to be married and start a family. The purpose of international family therapy, a kind of talk therapy, is to improve family dynamics and dynamics within the group. A group of people who are fond of each other is called a family. Lastly, with the help of psychologists and researchers, further solutions can be created and better help can be accessed for couples before and throughout marriage but can also give the children the best outcome from their family dynamics which in turn can create change in divorce rates in the future.
