Soleil Dixon-Widman Field Experience B: School Psychologist and Administrator Interviews SPD-500-O500 Jul 6, 2022 I had the pleasure of interviewing Anita Pendleton (Special Education LEA) & (Assistant Principal) and Maya Lui (School Psychologist) Explain your role as a member of the special education team. Ms. Lui: My role is to identify and address all behavior and learning difficulties the student may have as it affects their ability to function in school. Ms.Pendleton: I am the assistant principal and the acting LEA for McDaniel school. My role as a member is to ensure that all parties agree and are knowledgeable about the IEP process. I am also the facilitator. Discuss the specific responsibilities you have in meeting the needs of individuals with disabilities. Ms. Lui: During the testing process, I have to listen to students to know what their academic, emotional, or social problems are. I can also sign the student up for any counseling services that he or she might need. During the evaluation process and after I am done with my reports, I can also help students overcome their problems academically or behaviorally. Ms.Pendleton: Well, as I said previously, I am the facilitator, which means I get the IEP team together and help everyone to understand the common objectives set for the
meeting. After the meeting, I also ensure all the correct paperwork is handed out and signed by all parties involved. Describe your role in the IEP process. Ms. Lui: I work closely with a special education team to help write the IEP and to monitor student progress throughout the year. I am also communicating with the parents to ensure they agree and understand their child's diagnosis. Ms.Pendleton: My role is to oversee everything and ensure everything complies with the IEP. Explain when teachers should consult with you regarding the special education needs of their students. Ms. Lui: They should consult with me whenever there is a question about the diagnosis or any general questions regarding writing the IEP. Ms.Pendleton: They should always contact me, especially when something is happening in the classroom and needs to be addressed. Describe the role of the school in early intervention. Include discussion about how you communicate that to the family and how you support the staff. Ms. Lui: I can help give many different strategies to help teachers, parents, and other staff members of the IEP team. The strategies are based on the needs of the student. I can
help with behavior problems in the classroom and at home and any other aggressions the student might have. During check-ins to see if the strategies and working or help is how I stay in contact with the parents and staff. Ms.Pendleton: Whenever I take a class with either the distinct or PaTTAN, I take good notes and share them with my teachers. I sometimes even share powerpoints that were either made from taking the class or I made. I encourage teachers to share the information I give with parents or anyone else who needs it. Describe your experiences in working with students with disabilities by talking about the various disabilities you have encountered. Include discussion of the characteristics, causes, and prevalence of the types of disabilities you typically see in practice. Ms. Lui: I sit and observe students in all instructional settings during the evaluation process. This helps me to identify the appropriate intervention strategies and to collect data. I worked with many different disabilities such as Autism, Emotional Disturbance, Intellectual Disability, Specific Learning Disability, and Speech or Language Impairment. Other Health Impairment is the one that seems to come up the most, and basically, it covers a variety of conditions. Characteristics can be alertness, limited strength, and vitality. Some causes could be an accident, allergies, or multiple factors. Ms.Pendleton: There are many disabilities that my school does not support, and because of that, I interacted with many. My job is to find the proper placement right away for the student. To most common disability that comes to my school is autism.
