Empirical Research Article Summary What is your research question? How does the use of social media affect teen girls diagnosed with clinical depression? Provide an APA style citation for the empirical article you are reviewing. GÖKSU, M., RODOPMAN ARMAN, A., GÜNDOĞDU, Ü., & GÜMÜŞTAŞ, F. (2023). Social media use in adolescent girls with depression: The relationship between social media use purposes, lack of social support, and cyber victimization. Marmara Medical Journal . https://doi.org/10.5472/marumj.1379988 1. What is the research question/purpose of the study that you’re reviewing? The main goal of the study is to understand how social media use, the support adolescents feel from others, and experiences of cyberbullying are connected among teenage girls. The researchers are particularly interested in how these factors relate to girls who have been diagnosed with major depressive disorder. 2. What are 1 or 2 of the main points outlined in the literature review? Teenagers with depression spent more time on the internet and social media, using it differently than those without depression. Teens without depression used social media for information and sharing, while depressed teens used it to make new friends and share their feelings. Teens with depression felt more socially isolated and had greater social
competence needs, using social media to cope. They also experienced more cyberbullying, suggesting that depression and online bullying may be connected. 3. Are there hypotheses? If so, what were the author’s hypotheses? The researchers had three ideas they wanted to check in this study. First, they thought that teenagers with depression might face more cyberbullying. Second, they believed that the reasons depressed teens use social media could be different from those without depression. Lastly, they hypothesized that how depressed teens use social media and the support they feel might be connected to cyberbullying. 4. Describe the participants involved in the study? The study involved teenagers who were diagnosed with major depressive disorder (MDD) at a child psychiatric clinic between May and August 2018. Out of the 82 initially considered, 18 were excluded for reasons like not wanting to participate or having other conditions. An additional 10 were excluded for not using social media. The study focused on 54 girls with MDD, confirmed using diagnostic interviews. For comparison, 51 girls from high schools were included as a control group. 5. How were key terms defined in the methods section? (e.g. if your research topic is about depression and cyberbullying, then you should say how depression and
cyberbullying were defined in the research article. How did they measure depression? How did they decide if a student was cyberbullied?) Sociodemographic Information Form: Information collected from parents about age, education level, family income, psychiatric family history, and children's developmental history.
