RESPONDING TO PEERS! Respond to at least one of your colleagues’ scenarios. Select a scenario that has not yet received a response. (2 resources & 1 from library) Explain your approach for working with the new immigrant as a social worker. Hey Leah! Great post. Considering Maria’s traumatic past, it is important to create a safe and open environment where she feels comfortable expressing her concerns and fears. I would validate her emotions and acknowledge her difficulties in adjusting to a new culture and workplace, which can help build trust and rapport. As Maria’s social worker, I would take a trauma-informed and strength-based approach to ensure Maria feels supported and safe, considering her past experience. The strengths perspective focuses on understanding the personal and social process that helps individuals maintain a positive level of functioning despite the environmental challenges they face (Marsiglia et al., 2021). Maria has demonstrated resilience, determination, and a strong sense of family support. I would highlight her determination and her family support system, which can help her face any challenges. Im & Swan (2022) highlighted that individuals who learned about stress, trauma, and mental health gained a deeper understanding and knowledge about the intersections between trauma and culture. Additionally, I would connect Maria with resources to address the language barrier. I can encourage Maria to join English language classes or support groups, which can overall enhance her integration into American society. Another resource I can connect Maria with is immigration assistance and legal aid organizations. It is important for Maria to understand her rights and provide her with guidance to legal residency. Connecting her to resources can help alleviate some of the anxiety and fears associated with her undocumented status. As Maria’s social worker, I would educate her about affordable healthcare options and help her apply for health insurance. Maria has endured significant trauma, and her mental health is important. Therefore, I would connect her to mental health professionals and introduce her to support groups to assist her in her healing process. Consider how you might adapt the cultural formulation interview for the particular case. In approaching Maria’s case using the cultural formulation interview, I would ask questions and incorporate discussions related to her background and experiences in a respectful manner. My approach would be to learn more about Maria, which can help me come up with a diagnosis and come up with an effective treatment plan (Think Cultural Health, 2019). Similar to Dr. Kahn, I will focus on active listening and asking open-ended questions when Maria discusses her experiences or challenges. Instead of immediately suggesting solutions, my goal is to create a supportive environment where Maria feels comfortable sharing her thoughts and feelings. Through probing questions, I can encourage her to dig deeper into her emotions, coping
strategies, and how her cultural background and her past have shaped her mental well-being. Dr. Kahn had a very empathetic approach during the interview. By taking on this empathic approach, I can establish trust, gather valuable information, and create a culturally sensitive treatment plan that respects Maria and empowers her in the decision-making process. Additionally, I can ask Maria if she has any concerns about any potential misunderstandings and if there is anything I can do to provide her with the assistance she needs (Think Cultural Health, 2019). Adapting the cultural formulation interview, I can better understand Maria’s unique experiences and develop a more effective and culturally sensitive approach. Address what you would do if the client does not speak a language in which you are fluent. If I work with a client who does not speak a language I am fluent in, I will take several strategies to employ effective communication during the interaction. I would get an interpreter proficient in both languages to assist us in communicating during the session. Since Maria has family here in the United States, I would ask if they would be able to assist us in our sessions. Additionally, I can collaborate with my colleagues fluent in Spanish and English to assist with translation. I would provide paperwork or needed materials in the client’s native language to ensure they have access to relevant information. Regardless of the language barrier, my goal is to make sure that the client feels heard and understood through effective communication. Reference Im, H., & Swan, L. E. T. A Global Perspective Assignment Identify the population you have selected. The population I have decided to focus on is Latinx immigrants in the context of public policies and mental health. The United States is a top immigration destination, with more than one in four people identifying as an immigrant or child of immigration (Buckingham & Angulo, 2021). The United States has the ability to control who can come into the country and how they live their life. Many immigrants come to the United States with the goal of improving their lives. However, the reality may be inconsistent with their expectations. Pinedo & Valdez (2020) has stated that within the last two decades, immigration arrest and deportation have increased significantly. Undocumented immigrants are constantly living under chronic uncertainty, fear, and isolation, including threats of deportation and family separation (Garcini et al., 2022). According to the American Immigration Council proposed in Pinedo & Valdez's article, 16.7 million individuals in the United States have at least one family member without authorization to reside in the United States. Immigration policies can adversely impact the mental well-being of undocumented immigrants and their families, often leading to experiences of depression, anxiety, and PTSD. Buckingham & Angulo (2021) shared that those who do not have immigration papers are not able to go anywhere for fear that ICE will detain them, causing them to have no right to do anything. Based on the two peer-reviewed research articles you found, identify and explain two principles to guide ongoing practice with this population. Based on the findings from the three articles, advocating for public policies, promoting resilience, and empowerment are important principles to guide ongoing practice with Latinx immigrants and their families in the context of mental health. United States citizens Latinx have substantial relationships with migrants who are documented and undocumented. Pinedo & Valdez (2020) states that it is important for policymakers to consider potential harm to both migrants and their own citizens when creating policies targeting migrant communities. It is important to recognize that policies in place may cause more harm to individuals and communities. Therefore, it is urgent to advocate for policies to move toward immigration reforms, including ways for undocumented migrants to become citizens. Pinedo & Valdez (2020) highlights that migrants who are detained or deported should receive free mental health services along with their family members. These services need to help with the emotional and mental
