Martinez Family Summary Christina Martinez, an eight-year-old Latinx girl, was adopted by Jeannette and Miguel due to her mother passing away due to drug overdose. Due to Christina being neglected and abused by her mother, her evaluations reveal possibility of Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD) and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). As her adopted mother, Jeannette, emphasizes Christina “spent a great deal of time alone” and “explosive acting out behaviors and avoidance of any physical contact”. (Walden University, 2019). Significant Development Issue Christina demonstrates signs of isolation, anxiety, and behavioral issues after what she experienced with her biological mother. With the lost of her mother, Christina avoidances continue to raise which has impact her ability to establish a relationship with her adopted parents, Jeannette and Miguel, even her Gabby (fifteen-year-old teenage girl) and Tommy (2-month baby). Due to her traumatic experience, it has caused real issues mentally, emotionally, and physically which is the reason for anxiety and post- traumatic stress plus patterns of behavioral issues. As Claire Chiamulera (2013) emphasizes that when a young child experiences negligence and deficiency have more issues “cognitive impairments, language deficits, academic problems, withdrawn behavior, and problems interacting with peers”. Since Christina not only went through neglect but also their abuse, she will more likely have trouble with attentiveness and academically. Christina’s mother detachment with her has led her to develop insecurities and ineffectiveness attachments affecting connections with others plus developing low self-esteem, self-confident, and self-assertiveness (Chiamelera,2013). Dealing with the death of her biological mother and her psychological issues she is experiencing due to neglect and abuse has created much tension that is unbearable. However, during sessions, Christina is withdrawn and quiet affecting the ability to effectively assist her with the issues she is encountering which shows levels of both externalizing and internalizing problems (Broderick & Blewitt, 2020). Intervention for Christina Martinez Trauma-focused cognitive behavior therapy would be one of the best techniques to assist with Christina’s PTSD. Christina’s traumatic experiences has caused social and emotional withdrawment due to her biological mother’s neglection and abuse (Broderick & Blewitt, 2020). With the use of this intervention, Christina will be able to recognize her feelings, develop coping skills, be exposed to the traumatic experiences through images or drawings to develop a comprehensible trauma narrative, and classifying plus reexamining of erroneous trauma-related beliefs (Dalgleish et al, 2015). TFCBT has found to reduce not only PTSD but also behavioral issues which is widely used all over the states for children in the system who have suffered
from neglect and abuse (Kaufman, 2023). Having Jeannette and Miguel, adopted parents, involved within the process can not only assist with gaining understanding and knowledge over the psychological issues Christina is encountering, but can also assist Christina have the support of her family members to promote and develop relation connections with her parents.
