Context is particularly important for the assessment of developmental functioning. As you have learned in previous modules of this course, cultural, environmental, and socioeconomic factors impact our assessment of developmentally normative expectations and behavior in adolescence and early adulthood. In this discussion, you will consider contextual factors and their impact on emotional development into young adulthood. After reviewing the module resources, respond to the following:  How have expectations for early adulthood shifted across generations, and what factors contributed to these shifts?   Based on these observations, how do you think developmental expectations might further shift for the next generation of young adults? Expectations for early adulthood have shifted across generations in different ways. Young adults take on new responsibilities as they age. This time of life is typically when individuals attend college, get a job based on their chosen career path, start a family, and many more. They add on responsibilities as they grow and age. Expectations may have changed due to the increase in technology usage. Technology makes things quicker and easier, which may speed up the process of starting a new job or graduating college. The impact of various forms of media exposure on emotional development and emotional health in early adulthood can be very detrimental. Too much time spent on social media can lead to depression, anxiety, and bullying. Media exposure can also impact one’s sleep and j=nutrition. Spending time on social media late at night causes a lack of sleep, which then can lead to a decrease in school performance. I believe developmental expectations might further shift for the next generation of young adults as technology continues to grow. More and more people are working from home nowadays and as technology continues to expand and the work from home availability spreads, there may be an increase for certain careers to be working from home. As technology grows, the expectations will shift for the next generation of young adults.
