DQ 2.2 Post 3 Dear Kerryanne, Thank you for your well-written post. You make some valid points. I agree that “ counsellors should not avoid guiding a conversation towards how to accept oneself to avoid imposing personal value of self-acceptance.” The only thing I would change in your statement is the wording “imposing” to perhaps guiding , influencing , or supporting with the caveat of being in the best interests of the client. The word imposing has a negative connotation, implying force which means limiting one’s free will to choose--breaching the Canadian Code of Ethics of Psychologists (2017, p.11) of the Principle I: Respect and Dignity of Persons and People, people have a right to “self-determination” and the CCPA (2020) Ethical Principles of autonomy. This is similar to the hot ethical discussion we are having in DQ 2.1 of imposing on a client’s value. Reference Canadian Psychological Association.
