Report
Main Post Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) is a mental health condition characterized by an obsessive focus on perceived flaws in physical appearance. According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), the prevalence of BDD is estimated to be around 2.2% in the general population. It affects men and women equally, and its onset typically occurs in adolescence. According to McGrath et al. (2023) there should be an increased effort in the cosmetic/dermatology fields to assess for BDD where prevalence is relatively higher. This disorder is also connected with significant psychosocial adversity, manifesting in notable occurrences of school dropout, as well as elevated rates of psychiatric comorbidity and suicidality (McGrath et al., 2023). A client's culture can significantly influence their understanding and experience of Body Dysmorphic Disorder. Cultural standards of beauty, societal expectations, and cultural attitudes toward appearance can contribute to the development and manifestation of BDD symptoms. In cultures that emphasize specific beauty ideals, individuals may be more prone to internalize and obsess over perceived flaws that deviate from these standards. Cultural factors can also affect help-seeking behaviors. In most of society, there is still stigma or shame associated with mental health issues, potentially leading individuals with BDD to avoid seeking professional help. References McGrath, L.
