To be an engaged learner, an intern is focused on the highest quality of learning, which is deep and lasting. There are three domains to a High Quality Internship (HQI) that we can focus on that may enhance growth; Personal Development, Professional Development, and Civic Development (Sweitzer & King, 2019). Learning in all three domains/dimensions allow for a more wide learning or possibly widening our perspectives to see the “bigger picture” (and ourselves in that). We all bring different knowledge, experiences, attitudes, skills, and values to the experience, but to be engaged means to broaden these areas and grow. An engaged learner integrates other people into their learning, uses practical reasoning (Sweitzer & King, 2019), or makes sense of what they are doing while doing it, and has the ability to think creatively and look at issues from multiple viewpoints. Not just sitting back and being a passive learner, but being active in the learning experience by asking questions and looking for opportunities or problems to tackle, so that we may become the center of energy and pace our own learning. Being self-motivated seems to be a skill in engaged learning, as well as taking the time to reflect or connect. As an engaged learner, my strengths include being active in the learning process. I ask many questions and am always looking for something to do or get into. I am a practical reasoner and definitely make sense of what I’m doing while doing it, which is one of my strengths. I will say something and actually teach myself something at the same time! I am self-aware and this is a huge strength in the social work/human services/substance use/mental health fields. The ability to view things and people from multiple perspectives is a strength of mine. It’s easy for me to see the bigger picture in things. Challenges for me may be being creative and the affective realm. I have a huge heart and emotions when it comes to substance use and mental health and this can be a strength but can also be a challenge. Working in this field brings many emotions and learning to integrate the cognitive and affective realms is a challenge sometimes, especially with this being the first time that I’ve ever been in the field. Working towards growth and development in this area includes me working through these emotions, talking with my supervisor and other co-workers about the feelings, reflection, and self-care. Sweitzer, H. F., & King, M. A. (2019). The successful internship: Personal, professional, and civic development in experiential learning (5th ed.). Cengage.
