Mental imagery is an exciting area of research because it has been used in many real-world applications, including improving sports performance, counseling, promoting well- being, and improving memory. Locate an article on mental imagery published within the past five years. Provide a brief summary and critique of the article. Next, discuss the importance and applications of the article's findings in terms of contemporary issues. How could you use information from the article to improve cognition in different scenarios and professional settings? I chose an article titled “Harnessing Mental Imagery and Enhancing Memory Specificity: Developing a Brief Early Intervention for Depressive Symptoms in Adolescence”. This study utilized mental imagery to reduce stress of negative imagery and provide positive future imagery. The experiment consisted of nine participants between the ages of 16 and 18. They participated in 4 sessions that lasted up to 90 minutes. The article was very clear to state that the purpose was to see if it was feasible to perform this in schools. One critique I would give for this is the sample size. Nine participants makes it difficult to generalize the study to schools around the country. There also isn’t enough proof to say the participants were positively affected by this study in particular or other confounding variables. But they did find that the intervention is feasible. This is important because the idea of positive mental imagery could work in situations outside of just schools. This could work in professions that have a high turn over rate due to negative outcomes. These negative images could be replaced by the positive images from therapy session potentially leading to a positive outlook on work. Pile, V., Smith, P., Leamy, M., Oliver, A., Blackwell, S.
