2 Outline Contemporary Relevance “Retrofitting social learning theory with contemporary understandings of learning and memory derived from cognitive psychology and neuroscience” While social learning theory is one of criminology’s major frameworks, many criticize that its central mechanism, differential reinforcement, has not been properly observed or validated. The researchers think that the best way to handle questions about the validity of the theory are best addressed by retrofitting the theory with modern understandings of learning and memory from cognitive psychology and neuroscience, allowing for more meaningful future testing (Proctor & Niemeyer, 2020). Real-World Problem of Phenomenon Applying social learning theory to intimate partner victimization (IPV) Targets of IPV and their abusers tend to disproportionately come from families where violence and/or aggression were directly and/or vicariously experienced. This could be a potential starting point for the investigation of repetitive intimate partner victimization (R-IPV): an inter-generational transmission, or cycle of violence theory, evaluated in social learning approaches to criminal and deviant behaviors (Cochran et al., 2011). What would Rotter think or approach this? Because social learning theory is based on the fact that behaviors are learned through observation and modeling, I think that this application would make sense to Rotter because it argues that IPV may be learned from inter-generational transmission (Cochran et al., 2011).
