Module One – Short Essay PSY560 For my final project, I have chosen to examine the social learning and locus of control theory from Dr. Julian Rotter. After reading over the provided topics, I felt like this one really appealed to me. Rotter’s theory was that people will make a decision on how to act in a situation based on what they believe will be the outcome or consequences. The thought process you have when deciding which actions will determine what consequences is called locus of control. Rotter believed that the more locus of control one had, the more determined they may be to make a difference. The idea that people will do something based on what they believe the consequences are or what they could get in return is interesting (Funder, 2019). When doing research, it is important to identify primary and secondary sources. Primary sources are original records of information. These include interviews, court reports, autobiographies, manuscripts, and letters. Secondary sources are sources that analyze an event and are typically at least one step removed from the topic. Examples include documentaries, textbooks, radio broadcasts, and analytical works. When analyzing these sources, primary sources will more than likely give you a truthful, firsthand account. Secondary sources will also hopefully be accurate but there is room for errors because the author(s) were not witnesses. It is important to try to find and use primary sources to ensure accurate information (University of California, n.d.). While I could not find a definitive answer, it appears that Rotter used correlation studies to build his research. I came to this conclusion because correlational studies examine the relationships between two or more variables. These kinds of studies are non-experimental, meaning that the experimenter does not manipulate any of the variables, which it doesn’t seem that Rotter did.
Types of correlation studies can include archival research, surveys, and naturalistic observation (Cherry, 2023). When gathering research materials for my final project, I will try to focus on using primary sources. This would also mean following up on sources that are used in secondary sources. To find appropriate sources, I plan to utilize Shapiro Library, as well as other university libraries and well-known websites.
