EXAMPLE: Observation Template Observation Type: Anecdotal Observation Name: Joshua Age: 2 years DOB: 2nd February 2019 Setting: 2-3 years Indoor, 11.30am Date: 24th March 2021 Educator: Emma Written Observation Observe and record the interactions and behaviour patterns of children playing in a group. Joshua was riding the trike up and down the playground. He pushed off with his two feet to get himself moving and would laugh as he moved from one area of the playground to another. As he rode past me, he looked at me and with a big smile. Joshua then became distracted by an activity occurring in the sandpit and went to see what was happening. While he was doing so, Addison had spotted the trike and began riding around on it. When Joshua realised Addison had the trike, he ran over to her saying “It’s mine. It’s mine.” Joshua held on to the trike, preventing Addison from using it, calling out to me “Emma, it’s mine”. Getting down to Joshua’s level, I calmly tried to explain that he was riding the trike earlier but now it is Addison’s turn. Joshua began to cry and ran to sit under the tree with his head down and arms crossed. Another child soon approached Joshua, asking him to play. Joshua looked up at him, rubbed his eyes and went off to play. Analysis (please answer the questions below to help analyse your observation) What does this observation tell you about children’s interactions? When Addison began using the trike, Joshua became upset demonstrating that he did not understand it was free for someone else to use. He is still developing pro-social skills such as sharing objects and turn taking. List the prosocial skills you observed children demonstrating. While riding the trike, Joshua was sharing his happiness and pride with me, demonstrating a developing ability to engage in positive interactions. Joshua used expressive language to express his concern to Emma. Give one example of how children self-regulated their emotions during play. Joshua has shown that he is developing his self-regulation. When he was told that it was Addison’s turn on the trike, he removed himself from the situation and sat quietly on his own until he was ready to join another activity. What EYLF learning outcomes have you seen? (Include learning outcomes and description for each) Outcome 1: Children have a strong sense of identity Children feel safe, secure, and supported. Outcome 3: Children have a strong sense of wellbeing Children become strong in their social and emotional wellbeing. Children take increasing responsibility for their own health and physical wellbeing.
Outcome 5: Children are effective communicators Children interact verbally and non-verbally with others for a range of purposes. Where to From Here/ Future Planning What can you do to encourage positive relationship building between these children? Continue to develop Joshua’s self-regulation and resilience. Provide experiences that continue to develop Joshua’s social skills (turn taking, sharing, play). Discuss different strategies that we can use when we are feeling upset, angry, overwhelmed etc. Develop children’s awareness of fairness (sharing equipment). Observation Template Observation Type: Anecdotal Observation Name: Rhys Age: 2.5 DOB: Setting: 2-3 years old outdoor area Date: May 09, 2023 Educator: Joan Ojara Written Observation Observe and record the interactions and behaviour patterns of children playing in a group. Rhys was building a Lego blocks the suddenly got distracted on the children playing in the slide he left the Lego that he is working and tried the slide as well. Then suddenly he catches a glimpse of Arthur continuing the Lego blocks that he is working he ran towards to Arthur to get the toy from him “and shouted it was mine” but Arthur wouldn’t give in as well and saying the same thing. Since they are shouting so loud and claiming the Lego’s. I have sat with them and talk to them, I have explained to Rhys that the toy is for everyone that since he left the toy in the table someone could possible work on it. Then ask them to share and build it together which they both totally agreed they have help each other to make a tower with the Lego blocks. Analysis (please answer the questions below to help analyse your observation) What does this observation tell you about children’s interactions? I believe the children develop the pro-social skills of understanding and sharing. They have easily understood that they could share the toy and be a team to build a nice tall tower. List the prosocial skills you observed children demonstrating. They have developed positive interaction, expressive language and a good understanding of what I am trying to explain, they have also built teamwork.
