Reply to 2 other posts Forum Week 2: Infancy as Preparation for Adulthood Instructions: Infancy is viewed by developmental specialists as a period of "preparation for the future." Select one aspect of human development, ie. cognitive, social, emotional, etc. and in one paragraph describe caregiver practices and environmental characteristics that you see as most essential for supporting preparation work in that area. Then, find out from a family member about your own development as an infant and share it with the class (in 1 or 2 paragraphs). If this information is not available, interview a parent with a young child or discuss your own child's development.  Hello all, Infancy is defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as the period between the ages of zero and one year (CDC, 2021) . Babies learn to concentrate on their vision, reach out, explore, and learn about the world around them during their early years. Cognitive development, often known as brain development, refers to the process of learning memory, language, thinking, and reasoning. It is more than just producing sounds ("babble") or saying "ma-ma" and "da-da" to learn a language. Language development includes listening, understanding, and knowing the names of people and things. Babies are also building love and trust connections with their parents and others throughout this stage as part of their social and emotional development. The way parents interact with their infants will shape how they connect with them and others. Talking and reading to a newborn, spending time with, expressing affection to, and playing with an infant are all areas that I believe are essential for preparing a child for the future. Talking to an infant teaches them how to recognize different voices as well as understand words and noises. Reading to an infant promotes language development while also expanding their
grasp of words and sounds. Spending time with an infant and providing affection will assist an infant in feeling cared for while developing trust, safety, and security. Playing with an infant will help them develop their motor skills as well as their capacity to identify what they want. I was unable to learn about my own development as an infant, but I can recall how my children grew during their infancy. My children were raised in two cultures, with their mothers being German and myself being American. When I was stationed in Germany, they were spoken to and read to in both German and English. They would hear German from their mothers and their family, and English from their mothers and myself when we interacted with them. They learned German faster because more people spoke and read to them in German. We would buy books and toys for them from German stores and military installation stores. We provided them with children's movies in both languages to listen to and watch. When I wasn't at work, I would play peekaboo with them, make silly faces and noises, and cuddle and snuggle with them. When they started to babble and try to talk, I would reply to their noises and motions by talking back to them. When they started rolling over and supporting themselves more, we would get them toys that made sounds and identify different items that they could engage with. -Chrys References CDC.
