Final Project Milestone Three: Expanding Upon the Topic 2 One of the articles brought in race and social status and how those two things can have an effect on the outcome of a child grade based on parenting styles. This article takes it a step back and takes into acount the gender of the parent and how this can also effect the way they go about reacting to their childs school and grades. The researchers came up with multiple hypothesis for this paper, but the common theme was hypothesized that the involvement of either the maternal and paternal parent would be able to predict adolescents’ academic achievement rather than how the parents wereeducational raised and their income level. They also hypothesized that same- gendered parent-child parings would have stronger effects. 720 families were selected randomly sampled from 47 diverse school districts in the metropolitan area. The annual incomes of the families ranged from less than $5,000 to more than $95,000, with a mean range of $35,001 to $40,000, and a median income of $30, 001 to $35,000. They were all screened through 5 criterias and of the of the 1,085 who met the requirements, 749 passed. Those that passed went through interviews randomly through the year (October through May). After the family interview, the teachers reported the grades from the children. Both maternal and paternal academic involvement during seventh grade predicted the 12th grade academic outcomes. The initial hypothesis of same gendered parenting influencing were not replicated in the results. Maternal figures showed equal measures in attitudes regarding grades in both male and female children, whereas paternal figures showed a bias towards the male child. The harshnes level of the parenting was the deciding factor in the childs perception of their parental figure. For the female child the harsh level had to be low for a positive influence, but for the male child it was the opposite.
Final Project Milestone Three: Expanding Upon the Topic 3 The researchers thoughrouoly looked through and eliminated any confounding effects of the demographic variables. The researches noted that it was important to control the educational values, monetary statusas well as any variables that could influence how the parents perceived education as a whole. Researchers stated that these variables had to be dealt with to properly measure what they needed. The researchers also used several articles sorting and measuring out the confounding variables and giving readers a solid foundation on what each aspect of the study is about. In the beginning of the paper the researchers laid out the definitions and other studies related to gender and how this with other measures could affect how a parent conducts their behavior towards their child and their grades. In the other articles, the researches were trying to calculate whether parental influences can impact a child education and measuring the effects. By gathering different information from both parents and children the researchers were all able to come up with arguments supporting their hypothesises. The researchers Robinson, K., & Harris, A. L. (2013) wrote part of article about social class and its effect on a parents attitude towards their childs grade, while this article also went this route however they didn't use as many people and also used a broader range of individuals that the former article. They had more methods to pinpoint specific people so they could accurately measure the parental differences. In this article broke down the confounding variables that were drawbacks of the other 3 articles. I believe this article pulls them together and adds and more well rounded and detailed approach to measuring how much a parents influence can effect a child education. The beginning of the paper ,as stated, dives into explanationd on how this study is an important addition to the conversation. They breakdown how these aspects can have an influence on each parental gender and how they are similar, different and what they bring to their childs continual education. One
