2 Susan’s Will to Persevere Case Study Susan is a single mother taking online courses to obtain an undergraduate degree in Psychology while working full-time. Susan intends to pursue a career in Addiction therapy. A highly motivated exploration of other fields within Psychology inspired her to consider a Master’s or PhD. At the beginning of her coursework, Susan held high standards for the value of her work by being meticulous in her study schedule and coursework guidance. However, recently, she’s missed quality time with her friends and family and personal time to herself. A realization occurred to Susan: she could maintain a sense of self-control by writing papers and discussions much faster if she did it off the top of her head. By cutting corners in her work, Susan takes a hit to her grades and allows for more personal time. This case study reflects a social psychology concept of self-regulation. Self-regulation enables flexibility in different circumstances and demands by regulating impulses, desires, thoughts, emotions, and task performance (Baumeister & Bushman, 2017). Self-regulation has three primary components: standards, monitoring, and strength. In this instance, standards refer to beliefs of how things should be; monitoring refers to an evaluation of behaviors or responses you want to regulate (or change); and strength refers to willpower, precisely how to align changes and standards (Baumeister & Bushman, 2017). Research Support Research Summary People struggle with Self-Regulation more due to the effort required to complete the means to an end rather than the end goal itself (Critcher & Ferguson, 2016). Meaning that
3 practical self-regulation components may shift from positive to negative, resulting in ineffective self-regulation. Specifically, the importance of one's standards can shift. The means (behavior or activities) change due to monitoring and realizing there is a more efficient way of reaching the end goal. Strength, or willpower or persistence, has two avenues: persist past the short-cut," "efficient," temptation, or indulge the changed standard. That said, the importance of means, or standards, is significant. Critcher and Ferguson (2016) attempt to determine whether success and self-regulatory persistence predict a connection between goal means and importance. Effective self-regulation occurs when people persevere on tasks, they consider imperative, regardless of level of enjoyment. Research Interpretation Critcher and Ferguson (2016) found that the importance of goal means offered predictive influence in effective self-regulation. Weber et al. (2023) identified that high levels of self- concept clarity potentially drive self-regulatory efforts, specifically using adaptive cognitive learning strategies that assist in precipitating overall success. For example, say an individual knows they can achieve a goal but recognizes that there are multiple methods of doing so (adaptive learning strategies). Specifically, methods that achieve the goal but require less effort. Self-awareness, the extent to which a person focuses on their self-concept, drives the shift of one's self-regulatory standards (importance) around a situation. Self-regulatory monitoring (means) shifts as well due to self-concept clarity and awareness. They ultimately result in one's willingness (strength, persistence) to apply significant efforts toward the new means regardless of the effects because the individual is confident in their success despite the method of the means to get there. Adaptive learning strategies apply when the individual decides to leverage specific components of goal pursuit to make room for the newly shifted standards (Critcher & Ferguson,
