Learning Response Week 3 Alex Seguin 169034125 RE220 Prompt 1: Choose one learning objec ti ve outlined at the beginning of this lesson and briefly describe how the lesson material fulfilled it. Learning objective: Define and apply “myth” as a heuristic category in Religious Studies In religious studies, “myth” serves as a heuristic category for sacred narratives to convey symbolic and supernatural meanings often associated with religious or cultural history. Myths are stories, often involving gods, supernatural beings or anything else to create a narrative for people to learn lessons and understand deeper meanings. It is a heuristic tool used to analyze and interpret religious beliefs. The heuristic category of myth allows people to compare different myths across religion, finding similarities in the stories, themes and narratives, showing how universal our beliefs and concerns are even with completely different religions. However, comparing these myths can also create issues, such as diminishing the value of other stories. “ Many Christians, for instance, probably would not consider the creation story told in Genesis (the first chapter of the Bible) as a myth but they would consider the Haudenosaunee creation story a myth. This is because they associate myth with fanciful story and their own scriptures as revealed truth.” (lesson 3, “Mythology in Popular Culture”. Myths allow us to examine sacred narratives to find the meanings behind many traditions and allow us to function together as a society, this approach has also helped us understand other views and cultures during different times. Prompt 2: Succinctly summarize the main argument of one reading assigned this week. Reading: RPCA, Clanton Ch1, “The Origins of Superman: Reimagining Religion in the Man of Steel” Anker analyzes the similarities between Christ, and Superman, resonating with the Christian interpretations while other religions, such as Jewish people, may see more parallels with Moses. Looking at Superman, there is a lot of religious aspects that seem to appear within the character, showing how different perspectives on the
character can being up different assumptions and connections to other stories. It is emphasized how important the individual’s examination of the character changes, depending on background, and culture, showing how the interpretation to the character and its background is subjective. Prompt 3: Create 1 “mul ti ple choice + written” ques ti on based on any lesson material assigned this week. MC question: What are comics a form of? A. Religion in popular culture B. Religion in text C. Mythic narratives D. Scripture The answer is C.
